Fixed-Blade Broadheads Are Better than Mechanicals. And Here’s the Proof.

It's an old debate: fixed-blade vs. mechanical broadheads. After extensive testing and years of bowhunting, the author is ready to put the question to rest. Fixed-blades are better.

Have been a bow hunter since 1954 and have used fixed blade's exclusively. I've always said anything made by man will have a failure rate and no matter how small that might be, I don't want to be the one that has the failure. Having hunted all over North America and Africa I've never had a failure. Sharpening a broadhead is in my opinion just part of the bowhunting.

I am sure Howard Hill and Bob Swinehart if alive today would swear to fixed blades.

An archery big game guide and outfitter here in BC, will not allow mechanical broadheads to be used by his clients for moose hunting. He's been holding his clients to this ruling since the early 2000's.

Ripp, another great article. I always thought that fixed broadheads were probably better. This article provides reasons based upon experience.

I personally have taken dozens of deer, pronghorn and elk with my bow.. when it comes to elk sized game, the only time I have had an issue is when I ONCE used a mechanical .. horrible penetration..had to follow it around for an entire day before I got another arrow into him .. never used one since on elk.. do use them on pronghorn..work great on them..

Those were Michael Schnider's(guide) findings as well.

The blades broke off on ribs, etc. He always recommended a 2 blade broadhead. The model made in Germany were quite excellent.

Seems to me, these are the ones, iirc, coupled with a heavy aluminum shaft(2219, 2317, etc), making over 600gr. arrows.

I've had really good success as to penetration on elk with the Montec G5--they have redesigned them now, but the pic shown here is what I have and probably will continue to use.. I am shooting a compound so... cheating..

That looks like a decent broadhead, Ripp. I see they are investment cast.
The inventor of the 3-blade Snuffers was on a grizzly hunt with us one year, using his own broadheads.
He was quite a good shot with his recurve (75 or 80 lb. iirc). We used to practice every day, close to lunch
time and early afternoon before the evening hunt.
That was the only time I saw Michael allow more than 2 blades.

Plenty of sentiment here akin to my own.

Modern compound bows are such a complex contraption though, you might as well be using mechanical broadheads to complete the meccano set.

But mechanicals just don't seem "pukka" launched from 'traditional' recurves or long-bows.
Being exclusively a recurve shooter, I was raised on a steady diet of Davies Deltas until Allen 'invented' the Aztec. After that, I used Aztecs exclusively. They were less than a buck each back then, and I left several hundred of them scattered along the banks of the Burdekin and gulf rivers, lost in the bush. Complete pass-throughs on big boars with 23/64th cedar shafts were not uncommon from my 65lb Hoyt Pro-Hunter.
Those were the days!

Not sure I could ever embrace sight-pins and tiny non-helical plastic fletches, let alone any bow so short that a release-aid was mandatory.
That thing about old dogs and new tricks...

I certainly cannot find fault with your post, Marrakai, although deflex-reflex and curved limb tips are not really necessary.
