That's one potent cartridge Ripp!
I can see why you guys over in the States cart these around in bear country!

In the 1960s, I read about Dick Casull developing the 454 Casull, using Colt SA pistols and a triplex load. I was always intrigued by that cartridge.'

Some 20 years ago (+/-), I bought a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull. The gun is accurate and has never let me down. It is a great hunting pistol/cartridge combination. It can be loaded very mildly or as a flaming devil - well, no real flames but a very powerful load.

I reload for that gun. The only problem I have ever had was using small rifle primers and 30 gr of H110 pushing a 300 gr HC SWC bullet. The primer didn't ignite the H-110, just pushing the bullet and unburnt powder down the barrel. I then read others had the same problem and switched to mag primers. However, that isn't a Casull problem, just a problem with H-110.

Indeed it is.. I set up 3 flip targets on a 6"x6" wood block 6ft long..shot it with 45 long cold.. fliped the target back as it was suppose to ..that was it.. I then shot it with Buffalo Bore 454 Casull ammo.. knocked over the entire rig... Wood block and all..

I normally practice with 45 Long Colt..but when in serious bear country, load it up with the 454..however I feel the Buffalo Bore in 45LC would do just fine.. griz or not..

I also have the Ruger SRH in .454 Casull. I always use Small Rifle Magnum primers for it irrespective of the powder used. Most, if not all, of the reloading data I've seen recommends SR Mag primers for this cartridge.

Thanks for sharing Ripp.

Earlier this year, there was also another good article, in the Wolfe Publications "Handloader" magazine, on the .454 Casull.
To much Handgun for me but it is an awesome cartridge, way ahead of it's time.
A mate of mine, has a Rossi version, of an 1892 Winchester L/Action, factory chambered for the .454 Casull. Thats a phuckin handfull (with Heavy and Maximum loads), as well!

Big Horn Armory makes a nice lever in 454 Casull.. would be a great combo to ride the range with..

YES, full power loads can be a handful no doubt.. takes a bit of getting used to.. at least for me..

If I am planning to do much shooting with either my Ruger 454 or RPM 444 Marlin, I wear riding gloves with padded palms. For hunting, I don't seem to notice the recoil.

A couple of years ago, I started using electronic ear muffs for even hunting. Perhaps if I had used ear muffs when I started shooting in the 50's, I would be able to hear better.

Wow those rifles must be very well made to hold up to .454 Casull - pressure wise!
Correct me If I'm wrong but the .45Long Colt should be able to fire in its chamber, like a .38 Special in a .357 Magnum?

Yes..you can shoot a 460S&W, 454 Casull and 45 Colt all in the same handgun...

There was a bloke at the range down here, that had a Big Horn, Lever Action (Model?), in .500 S&W.
A stunning rifle, with a similar price tag ($5K-ish AUD) ....... but I'd like to have one as well!

Yes, the Big Horns are NOT cheap.. but, they are a beautiful lever if that is your flavor...

No wonder you want one of these Homer, boy oh boy, aren't they very nice pieces of kit!
If you could get those rounds up from 1600 in a pistol to about 2300fps in a rifle like that then you certainly could enter that in BGR as a Group 1 rifle - the special snap event would be fun then!
