Similar experience, anyone ?

I just had my FN-Browning o/u 9,3x74R re-regulated for the softer 285 Norma Alaska (it shot perfectly with my former Blaser 286 CDP's but I found them too hard and not expanding enough). I went to the range and shot some of the left over ammo (fresh Norma factory loads) that was used for regulating. 2x2 shots grouped within 1" at 50 m, Ok thus. Then I tried some 15 year old ammo (same factory load, same Norma reference, of which I bought several boxes at a bargain price) and was appalled to find that with these, the bbls. were crossing 5" apart. Evidently, both factory loads were not the same. I'll dismantle them and try reducing the original powder charge by a few grains so as to lower velocity a bit and counteract the crossing, in order to bring the bbls. together. Hopefully, I'll be able to use up my old ammo stock that way.

3 shots do not make a group, they show a point of aim or impact.
5 shots are a group.

Andre,

I have experienced the same thing with older Norma ammo in 8X57JR. All my Norma ammo in that caliber is somewhat old, but the oldest, about 40 years old, is quite HOT ; some that is moderately old...about 25-30 years old...is still much hotter than the last run I bought before Norma quit listing and importing the 8X57JR. All my Norma factory 9,3X74R is about 5 years old, or newer, and seems to shoot uniformily.

The Norma loadings in both calibers are much hotter than Sellier and Bellot ammo, and the 9,3X74R Norma is hotter than my 20 year old and older RWS loadings. The RWS all seems to be uniform...oldest to newest.

You may have a point here. True, the primers of my old stuff are flattened and craterized as opposed to the unmolested primers of the fresh ammo, suggesting a hotter load. Hopefully then, my idea of reducing the (old) factory charge may work. I'll keep you posted about my findings.
