Blaser K95 22 hornet, my new favourite rifle.
      #355376 - 20/07/21 09:12 AM

I picked up a Blaser K95 22hornet barrel to go along with my 30/06 barrel, it took months to arrive but was well worth the wait.

I worked up a few loads for it, but the two I'm sticking with are the 40gn Hornady Vmax in front of 13gn of Lil'gun and a subsonic load that's even quieter then a standard 22lr subsonic load consisting of the 40gn Winchester HP 22mag pill and 2.2gn of Trailboss.

It works with the forend from my 30/06 Stutzen barrel, is very easy to reload, the spent shells can fall out if I tip the gun. It's very accurate and so much quieter then a 223rem by a long way.

It's definitely the perfect companion for the bigger barrel, I was thinking I should have bought a bigger 22 calibre as the hornet only has a 1:16 twist which limits my pill selection to 45gn or less but all my worries soon faded once I started using it.

I highly recommend this barrel if your looking for a small game barrel to compliment your existing K95 big game rifle.

Both barrels

Final load development targets.

So far I've shit a couple of foxes and 5 meat goats with it, all one shot DRT headshots from 40m to just over 200m.

Regular old feral Boar goats that have been running wild since the Gold rush days.
Not the most challenging to hunt but very very tasty.

Well done.

I've never owned a .22 Hprnet nut always liked the idea of one. Sort of good to use as a .22 RF or .22 Mag RF, with a lot more power, but not as damaging as a .222 or .223. Can shoot thousands of rounds from a KG of powder too. 45 gr projectiles good on foxes and rabbits and hares. Can kill Euros, Wallabies and Roos as well. BTW had five feeding in the paddock next to house last night.

I like that little Blaser.

Those two fluffy goats would make nice floor rugs as well as good eating.

Got about a dozen roos out the front of the cabin tonight, heaps of them and wombats too.
The goats have really breed up good, you see mobs of up to 50 getting around now.
Deer are still light on the ground but after building a new dam above the river there's a mob of 5 does and a roughly 3 year old buck living there noe, and quite a few living around the edges.
Even get pigs coming through and they are about the only thing targeted for fun. If you just shoot gongs and only take what you want to eat then the game numbers get a chance to build a stable population.

So in keeping with that philosophy the hornet is as good as the 30/06 when your only head shooting.
That's why I worked up the subsonic load, I can shoot gongs and spinners and not spook the game.
Great for practising various field positions, although I've been practising shooting 8" gongs at 100m with the 12ga double and my cheap home made trap load slugs a bit too.

Great to hear that you got that little Hornet going!
I didn't know you could get .22 Magnum pills separately - fantastic grouping by the way matey!
Yes Trailboss can be a great reduced load powder, not all cartridges can run on it, but those that do are great fun to play with!
The .32-20 is another great one for this powder, 2.5gns under a 115gn pill for just over 800fps & yes its pretty damn quiet too!
The old goat may not be in the same league as deer to hunt, but they taste pretty good & some of those skins are rather spectacular; yours being in that lot.
Well done mate......lucky bugger!

I figured if I wanted more speed then I would have bought a 5.6x52R barrel so the standard hornet suits my needs.
I can always get it cut to a K hornet if I decide later that I need it.

I don't bother shooting big billys any more, not unless they are 40"+ and there's none that big around here.
I'm more of a meat hunter these days so I mostly only take what I want to eat, and these younger ones are great eating.
This is another one I got a couple of days earlier, I find this size is the best for eating and easy to carry out.

Congratulations on your purchase, 22 Hornet and 30-06 are a really appropriate combination for hunting all around Oz, and the rifle looks great!

Two roos were up and fighting as well. Light wasn't good enough to photo or film.

You used to get them in a box or bag of a thousand or several thousand. Not sure if they were difficult to get for a time?

If available again, I should get 10,000 of them. For apocalyspe supplies. And also bunnies, hares and foxes. Got 2x .222's and a .222R and a .223, so could shoot them in one or more of them. Perhaps the old .222 Rem 788.

Pity mufflers aren't legal in Oz.

I just like this gun, I zeroed a 2-7x36 Kahles aon it today as my walking/stalking scope, makes the gun very light and handle beautifully.

Decided to get another mount for it, run the 6-24x40 for spotlighting until I find a or get around to putting a 4.5-14x44 zeiss on it and then run two 2-7x36 Kahles scopes on it as well.
One for full roar loads and one for subs.

Nice looking rifle especially with the black receiver, well done. Good choice of cartridges especially the hornet, excellent little round.

I really like the look of the 22 Hornet and is a very useful little cartridge. In Scotland it used to be used on all deer up to Reds with little complaint. But the brought in rules on minimum of 50gn bullet weight and 2450fps velocity and you can’t quite do this with a Hornet. I have an old Rook rifle I am thinking of lining to a hornet, but would really be able to use it on foxes.

With your subsonic loads and a bit of load development you might well get a load that allows you to use the same scope. So it shoots your normal velocity bullets to say 1” high at 100, but this sight setting also gives you a 50 yard zero with your subsonics. Makes life very simple and you can use both at the same time.

I like separate scopes for separate jobs with my Blasers, that's the beauty of having 100% return to zero scope mounts.

If you get yours lined to 22 hornet see if you can get a 1:14 twist not the 1:16 that most factory hornets are made with.
If you use Lil'gun then you will very easily shoot a 50gn bullet over 2450fps. I have heard that the 50gn nosler shits bullets will stabilise in a 1:16 hornet barrel.
I'm going to try some out with Lil'gun and if they stabilise I should be able to get around 2750fos from them 🤞
