Webley & Scott 700 Shotgun

I am looking at buying a Webley & Scott 700 12gauge shotgun,does anyone know anything about them ? The one I am looking at has 30" Barrels, DT, Ejectors, Thanks

There is a Webley & Scott catalogue on the web, courtesy of our Viking bretheren, which has a reasonable introduction to the firm. As far as A&D boxlocks go, they were pushing the screw-grip in three grades in that catalogue, plus a bunch of cross-bolted guns like the Reliance etc. I believe its the 700 which is often illustrated in other texts, such as Boothroyd's 'Sidelocks & Boxlocks' (page 140) and the Parker Hale catalogues. A friend of mine here in Darwin has one, and likes it a lot. No doubt others here will have more to add, hopefully first-hand.

Recently, my (soon to be) son in law bought one I located for him. Made about 40 years ago and in unfired condition, we got it for 1600 € (1900 USD), which, I think, is a bargain.

Nice original condition on that one your future son-in-law acquired, Andre, love seeing them like that. Most Australian examples have been very well used indeed!

I'm rather proud of the deal. The gun had been sitting on the shelves since the actual owner took over the business, > 30 years ago. The colour case hardening of the breech face was unblemished until we took the gun out shooting. After a few shots, there were the usual ringmarks around the firing pin holes, proof of its unfired condition. It handles and shoots fine. The only thing I personally dislike is the auto safety, which is easy to get rid of, but then, it doesn't bother Christopher so, to each his own.

I will be picking up my W&S 700 next week not as good as yours but it is about 95% and tight action. After seeing the price you paid I will keep the price I paid to myself! Good Shooting.

Anybody got an update for the Webley & Scott shotgun catalog? The link is no good. I need to ID a pair of shotguns.

I have located two Webley and Scott shotguns and need to learn more about them before I jump. One gun is a hammer gun and one is a box lock

The box lock gun was quoted at $85, and at that price I can almost not afford to pass it up.

Could some one please give the 5 minute internet Expert buyers class on what to check and look for. What can be forgiven and repaired and what can not.

IF that isn't a typo an is really $85. Then it doesn't matter what's wrong with it. Buy the gun. You can always use it for parts if nothing else.

Well actually it is R600.

I don't know if this gun is W&S 700 or not. It Is W&S.

It has two lumps but I didn't close enough to see what kind of lumps.

What kind of things should I be checking?

How can I tell what it is?

Hi guys
I've got a 700 in 16 gauge manufactured in 1957 .It looks like it came out of the shop just last year 95% original tight as tight you really have to make an effot to open it 2 3/4" ejector DT 28" tubes .1/4 and 1/2 chokes and I love shooting it.

Doug I have the 1967 catalogue which covers the 700,701,702 and 710 its a reprint from cornell publications or abby books try www.cornellpubs.com the 700 series was made from 1949 through to 1979
W&S changed hands in 1958??????????? I think befor finally shutinh the doors in 1979.

The Webley & Scott catalogue that I have for 1967 and has "American Tradditional Design" printed on the cover.
As only the English would know their numbering system for the 700 series is a little different.
briefly the go in this order
700 plain Jane
701 Delux
702 middle of the road
710 28 gauge I have also seen listed a 728 as a 28 gauge which stands to reason but this numbering system has no reason

The 700 has a straight hand stock 2 triggers hand engraved English scroll engraving.
the 701 pistol grip and beavertail forend single trigger fully engraved
the 702 prince of wales stock and beaver tail less engraving than the 701 bot more than 700
701 & 702 had a gold oval in the stock 700 had silver.
you could have any option on any gun as long as you paid including 28" or 30" as long as you paid.the catalogue gives you the option of 12 or 20 ga or 28 ga in the 710 but my gun is a 16 ga made in 1957.Either the Americns could not be trusted with a 16 Ga or they were deleted from production but they are not mentioned in this catalogue.
