Building a .500 Jeffery.
      #354619 - 25/06/21 10:34 AM

Thought that I'd show photo progress of my .500 Jeffery build. I'm not personally doing it a gunsmith is. Started with a Sarco Mauser action, Swift bottom metal, a .458 follower and a Douglas .500 barrel 26" contoured Remington 5a I believe.

action and barrel mated for the first time. Threads were sloppy so had to cut and rethread. Barrel now 25.25".

barrel contour compared to a standard 30-06

The business end.

the bottom metal that came with it and the Swift bottom metal.

removing tool marks.

getting ready to machine the mag opening on the action to mate the bottom metal to the action.

Coming along nicely Casper!
I can't believe that you can't get a stock duplicated in the States, surely someone out there must be able to do it - perhaps Boyds if you can give them the 'template stock' & the blank that you need to complete it?
Please keep up with your build photos - very interesting Calibre the 500 Jeffery

Trying to buy this stock blank. Grain runs through the wrist very well and I love the smokey type grain.

I won the stock off of ebay. Sent to the gunsmith to make sure it will fit the action within the sellers 30 return policy. Then if it will work fine I'll get it and begin the finish work.

Smith is rethreading my barrel as the threads and receive had lots of slop. I appreciate his diligence in noticing and saying something, and fixing the problem.

Coming along nicely albeit slowly for you Casper!
How did the stock go, I hope that part worked out for you mate?
I'm assuming here that you have got dies & brass etc, can you tell us what loads you intend to run in this beast?

Going to use Woodleigh 570 grains. But haven't decided on a powder or amount as of yet. I had the stock sent the smith for him to make sure that the 98% inletting wasn't too large. Stock had a 30 day return policy and I don't think I'll get the metal back in time to make that cutoff. Smith said it will work.

G'Day Fella's,

FYI Casper50, in the current edition of Wolfe Publishing's "Handloader" magazine (#333, August 2021, page 12), there is a brief article by Gil Sengel on the 12.7 x 70 (.500 Jeffery or .500 Schuler) cartridge.

Let me know if you can't get your hands on a copy of this article, and I can scan and email you a copy of it.

With a good tight fit between the case neck and bullet, they shouldn't need crimping, should they?

Yeah, they need crimping alright!
The neck on the .500J is technically too short, given the inertia of the heavy projectile during recoil.
No-one I know, or have ever corresponded with, has been able to get away with not crimping this cartridge.
One 500J-owner, reloading at my bench a few years ago, scolded me for reaching for the deburring tool after case-trimming.
In his opinion the sharp case-mouth helped the crimp to hold!

Oh yeah - forgot about neck length. Makes sense.

I used the sizer die for my 6.5x68 as a crimping die for my .50/70 Sharps (to help ignition as well as hold the bullet in a non-sized cased).
I don't think the shoulder would be in the way as the case did not enter the die's base very far.

Beats me!
My friend's contention was that the sharp edge after trimming adds extra "bite" to the crimp.

Admittedly, deburring is in reality outside-deburring and inside-chamfering, the latter thinning the brass at the very point where it needs to be strongest, to hold the crimp.
So perhaps his argument was valid!

The trouble with zero chamfering, is bullet shaving upon seating them.
Just barely removing the trimming burr would help.

Well, sure.
Personally, I always deburr cases after trimming.
But they're guilding metal after all, not lead, and I don't think the quarry could ever detect a few minor cosmetic scratches on the bullet at impact!

Bought some sights off of Ebay UK for the .500. For the work that has gone into making these I almost stole them. I know 500 yds is unrealistic and will never happen. I just like express leaf sights. lol
