A. MYERS - A MASSIVE 4-BORE (4 1/2IN.) DOUBLE-BARRELLED TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN

serial no. 806, for 1980, 35 7/8in. nitro barrels, 4 1/2in. chambers, fences with protruding striker nipples, rebounding sidelocks, border engraving, the lockplates gold-inlaid 'A. MYERS', retaining much original colour-hardening, 14 1/2in. pistolgrip stock with horn pistolgrip-cap and buttplate, beavertail fore-end, weight 24lb.

Now that is one big thumper!
24lbs worth, will certainly need a gun bearer (or 2) to help carry that cannon about!
Lovey workmanship to say the least.....absolutely marvellous, but way too much for even most of us here!

I'd shoot it. But would need Mpofu to carry it for me. Hell, even the ammo would be heavy.

Would be very interesting to see the proof marks. Wondering, if it were from 1980, whether it was proofed for black powder or some kind of smokeless load.
Looks to be possibly a bit loose with the rear of the rib showing proud of the breech face and the top lever notably over to the left?

I'd give it a go, what with a 24lb gun and typical heavy clothing that one would wear on the waterfowl marshes. Still.....not for the recoil shy or faint of heart.

It's definitely not the sort of thing you would take for a walk chasing pis or Buff, although if you can get close in a vehicle and jump out to smash one, it would definitely smash the crap out either.
While I'd had to shoot it myself, I would absolutely love to watch someone else use it to good effect.

Some questions for a discussion.

When posting the photos, I was thinking the bore gun was rifled and a double rifle bore gun.

But it appears to be smooth bore and indeed appears to have no rear sight.

So is this 4-bore meant to be used as a shotgun?

Perhaps for UK sea marsh waterfowling? Sort of a carryable punt gun?

Second question/discussion point. Were the old African elephant hunting bore guns in 4-bore and even up to 8-bore actually smooth bore guns? I know a lot of the 8-bores were rifled, but assume most of the 4-bores were smooth bore? Perhaps there is also an element of the time period in which the bore guns were made, earlier guns being smooth bore? Comments?

Just for me Id be happy with a smooth bore. Its not like its meant for shooting much beyond 10 yards. Besides nothing on four legs is truly dangerous past that distance anyway

36" barrels.......almost assuredly a waterfowl gun.

Not positive about ALL 4 Bore meant for dangerous game; I infer from reading Baker that the early 8 & 4 were smooth.
Later on full rifled, & would have to have been if they were to shoot a Fosbery design bullet, conical type slug, or the "exploding shell".....I have gotten to shoot a Bland 4 Bore single that was in fact full rifled. Inspected a 4 Bore double at H&H years ago that was also full rifled.

This is a beautiful gun. However, at 24 pounds, it would be difficult (for me) to mount and swing on waterfowl, particularly from a boat.

I think many 2 bore and 4 bore waterfowl guns were made for market hunters shooting birds on the water and as such, were somewhat plain guns that would be exposed to the harsh salty marsh environment.

Still, it is a beautiful gun and the product of a master gun maker.
