A question for you tinkerers
      #353706 - 23/05/21 11:40 PM

Does anybody know if a Colt barrel will fit on a Uberti/Pietta clone? I want to shorten the barrel on my SAA clone. I could just cut it and replace the sight but I keep seeing Colt barrels at reasonable prices.

Ive been told that most Colt parts will fit the clones. What I dont know is if there was any changes between generations or anything else that I dont know.

This will be a gunsmith job but I want to make it as simple and quick.

The answer is it depends.

1st generation colt barrel thread is .695-20tpi tapered
2nd generation barrel specs were the same as 1st
3rd generation thread is 24tpi
Uberti thread is 11/16-20tpi which is smaller than colt
Pietta thread is mertic 18x1

Whatever you have might be different, and your gunsmith should be able to figure it out.

Your smith will figure it out.
You'll be fine.

Well I havent bought the Colt barrel yet. I had hoped it would be a "simple" just screw out the old one and screw in the Colt barrel; but if the threads arent likely to match then Im not sure I should spend the money on the barrel. Or am I missing something?

Even if the thread is the same you likely would have to adjust for cylinder gap and thread timing.
It's very rare for a randomly selected barrel to fit up properly on any particular revolver.

I figured that but Im confused, if the thread doesnt match how is it changed without cutting the barrel. Im totally out of my knowledge base

Different manufacturers used different thread sizes and even different external dimensions of the cylinders. But things are never that simple: some thread sizes and cylinder dimensions differ within the same manufacturer's production depending on year or contract. Things just aren't as easy as when we could fit a Christie's barrel and cylinder to a 1st or 2nd gen Colt. Don't get me started on fitting internal parts between the various manufacturers--it is a flippin' nightmare.

Live's too short. Chop your barrel or trade the gun off. Unless it is a 44 Special, and you've always had a desire for a 32 WCF--in that case, let's talk.

There's ways - but it depends on the situation, depends on what exactly is on the bench.
For instance, 11/16" equals 0.6875"
If you have an 11/16"x20tpi hole and a Colt barrel with a slightly larger diameter 20tpi stub, and you have the right skill set and a proper lathe, you can get them together without tremendous metal removal.
There's other issues to consider, but there's a thumbnail look at part of the problem for you.

There are reasons why custom revolver work costs whatever it costs. It takes knowledge and experience and skill as well as tooling *and it takes time* to get these things together - and not all vendors are equally qualified to do the work.

If you have a gunsmith who can make it happen, get with them first and then go forth with your sourcing of whatever you need for the project.

Consider that a revolver barrel can be made from a bare barrel blank, and can be cut and profiled and threaded and populated with sights and ejector rod housing etc *all from scratch*. That happens every day.

Well I fell humbled. I had no idea it could be that involved and still be made to work. I always knew gunsmithing was a skilled job, even that some smiths did better than others but Ill never complain about the cost of custom work again.

I really figured it would be as simple as screw out/screw in then some fine work to have it spaced and the sight aligned.

Thanks guys

Still it's possible that it's a quick and relatively low priced job.

It just depends.
