The British Pattern 1796 Heavy Dragoon Carbine

Though unquestionably formidable, the British Pattern 1796 Heavy Dragoon Carbine was one of the most subtly elegant and innovative cavalry arms of its day.

Good article Ripp - certainly a well thought out arm for its day!

Fascinating.
One can see the distant origins of the Westley Richards droplock.
Treating the lock as a “cartridge” must have been quite revolutionary at the time. The design reminds me of an actual door or cabinet lock which is mortised into a door.

That lock was way ahead of it's time.
