Purina "Dog of The Year"... Field Trials Champion
      #352803 - 28/04/21 11:56 PM

I have a good friend who competes in field trials around the US.. Has a trainer out of Georgia where the dogs do competitions during the year..

The final trial was last weekend in Reno, Nevada.. My friends dog needed to only place and he would win Dog of the Year. Was going to be a very quick short trip. He asked if I could go with and help him drive as well as get things ready for the trial. I have never been to one before and he needed a driver to drive through the night so I accepted.

We left Bozeman, MT and 14 hours later we arrived in Reno, Nevada..3:30AM.. got the horses and dog taken care of and checked into the hotel. Got up after about 4 hours sleep to get ready for the days events.. met with the dog trainer and checked out the area we were competing in..

Saturday morning we were first up for the day, at 8AM. We turned the dog loose and for one hour judges and other riders follow the 2 dogs released and watched them perform.. finding birds and how wide of an area they hunt.. following the dogs on gaited horses..

My friends dog did extremely well.. in fact instead of just placing he ended up winning the entire event.. see below..Also because of winning, his trainer also won "Trainer of the Year" for the 3rd time in 4 years..

AND, I got to meet TINKER from the NE Forums.. unexpected good surprise...

Congratulations on the success of your friend.

He needs to share some solid training tips with me for my little monster.

BTW where do you "house" the dogs when travelling and at such an event?

How do you travel for such a long drive with horses? Stop to exercise them?

I've never been to any sort of dog show or trial myself.

Very interesting. I've never heard of that type of contest before.
Thanks for the heads up, Art. Maybe someday will also meet Tinker.

HE has a very nice trailer to keep the horses in .. also a specially built portion for the dog.. They have a nice area to rest, drink and eat on the way.. we stop every few hours and give the dog a break.. let him do his business and keep moving down the road..

Horses travel well .. we stop on the way and also let them water and eat.. then off again...

I had not been to a trial where the horses are used.. it was very entertaining on several fronts.. some riders are not as good as they think they are..so there is normally a wreck or three.. ... Watching the dogs work is amazing.. All the work/effort put into training them really shows.. AND, I really enjoying riding.. have been since I was 2.. Riding in the high mtn desert was very similar to riding in Montana.. sage, etc..only our soil is much more solid..

The gaited horses are like riding in a lazy boy recliner.. they glide through the sand..

What a rocket run of a weekend for you guys.
Thirty hours drive for an hour on the trail.

It was good to fit in there and shake hands before you guys headed into the sage for the run.

I'll have to get over to your hills for a visit some time in the next year or so.

I should look at the process for getting nonresident tags

You really need to do this road trip.

Wonderful you guys were able to meet up.

The Nevada desert looks nice, and not hot at all! BYW is it at altitude?

Well done Ripp & mate for the dog trials!
Glad he took out the event, especially with all the hard work paying off!
Well done indeed!
Tinker,
it must be very gratifying to meet someone you have talked to for years & finally put a face to the name & comradery you have shared over this time. I hope your trip back over to Montana comes more sooner than later; with plenty to discuss (& shoot) when you get there!
Thank God for the animal breaks, you all would have needed those as well - one hell of a trip & what lovely country to do the trials in!
Congrats once again

Agreed--as we were outside Reno a bit and certainly gained elevation to our area.. found this on the net..

"Altitude. Reno is an ideal tourist spot because of its casinos and proximity to the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains. ... It appears that Reno is located on a flat plain, but the city is actually located at a high elevation of nearly 5,000 feet above sea level."

IF it wasn't for all the Californians moving there it would be a fairly nice city..

This worked well for us as the elevation in Bozeman is just a bit higher where the dog was trained..so, he had an advantage training here at the higher elevations vs the much lower elevations of Georgia, where the dog is normally kept...

Thank you Daryl.. Probably a large part due to the fact we had coffee together..

I googled Reno today and saw several tabs to click on for info.. clicked on this one as to the most beautiful mtns in the USA.. This popped up..

Which state has the most beautiful mountains?
Montana
Montana. A land of vast open prairies, glorious mountains, picturesque ranch towns, and big blue skies, Montana is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful states in America.Jul 12, 2020

Made me smile..however there are other states with very beautiful mtns as well.. Wyoming, Colorado as 2 that come to mind immediately... however Colorado's politics are not a positive, leaning much more to the left than say Wyoming.. SO,, I pick Wyoming.. where I would move if I left Montana..

Bit sad when once I would have thought Colorado politics would have been the opposite.

Back 20 to 30 years ago perhaps.. not anymore.. Bigger cities have been infiltrated by the west coast.. Tech giants move into the area and bring their bullshit politics with them..

Ripp, really interesting report - I had never heard of field trials on horse back, that I had missed initially and congratulations on your friend for the results. By the way is the dog a Pointer?
