HELP - Woodleigh Bullets
      #352840 - 29/04/21 12:43 PM

Looking for any assistance from members in Oz that could provide contact info for Geoff McDonald and Woodleigh Bullets.

BACKGROUND:
The availability of Woodleigh bullets here in the USA is spotty (read SUCKS) at best. The 3 USA importers noted on Woodleigh’s website are seemingly not interested, or are unable, to maintain stock of bullets for the usual (& unusual) British calibres.

So, myself and Steve Bertram are keen to be able to import sufficient Woodleigh bullets for the community of Brit rifle shooters here in the USA.

Myself and Steve Bertram http://www.bertramandco.com have both emailed the Woodleigh website listed “info@“ contact for Woodleigh ……..with no reply.

Any help in establishing contact with Woodleigh would be greatly appreciated.

I can be reached by PM here, or by email at mwarren777 (at) gmail (dot) com

Geoffs number is international +61 3 5457 2226. Just give him a call, if he is on the machinery one of the girls will leave him a message and he will call you back. I know he is having a little trouble getting staff at the moment so that may be part of the problem.

Hi Mike, I was intending to reply to your PM or email.

I don't know. Some companies can be difficult to deal with online, and the old method, in person or on the phone works far better.

Sooner or later I may see how supply is going at Woodleigh, as I put in a big order, but not big enough! My wallet limited it several times. The big order through a local BGRC club. Some are rarer bullets such as 250 gr 8 mm and 240 gr .30 bullets, I want to give these a try in my rifles. 270 gr RNSP for the 9.5x57, 160 grs for the 6.5 mm's. Plus some very coomonnom types such as 150 and 180 gr SPs in .30. I have not bought many projectiles for a long time and used my hoarded store of stocked bullets. Most are no longer made!

Anyway will see how supply of my order goes.

Get on the phone and speak direct.

Thanks to all, Steve Bertram was able to ring up Woodleigh and spoke to a nice woman on the other end.
Apparently very low stock on all inventory and starting (re-starting?) with small calibre first.

Woodleigh agreed to send Steve a price list with the warning that air freight cost to the USA has tripled in the last year.
....investigating sea freight costs.

So some headway has been made and Brit rifle enthusiasts in the USA that prefer original style great performing bullets from Woodleigh may yet have another source.

Mike

I do know that Jeff, and importers have struggled with freight costs out of AU for many years. This combined with the large quantities required to make the shipment economical. Also getting a FF to take such small shipments on is difficult and expensive, particularly given the nature of the product and hoops that need to be jumped through.
This will only have been exacerbated by COVID and resulting freight charges on average tripling.
But, hey give it a crack.

Interesting, we got the cost breakdown on shipping, permits, obscure fees, etc. Absolutely insane. Not Woodleigh's fault my any measure.

The fee system just to get even ONE box OUT of Oz......
Air freight $8.65/kg
then:
EDF $69.00
Security fee $156.60
AWB fee $55.00
Screening $140.94
Vulnerable fee $150.00
Permit fee $55.00
EDN $35.00
Handling $65.00

- $726.54 in "fees" before it ever leaves the country......WTF?
- then airfreight or surface shipping cost after that

Then there is:
USA port, clearance and delivery charges USD $$$$$

Could come to in excess of $2500USD just in "costs" to get them here, exclusive of actual carriage costs; we are having to "sharpen our pencils" on this one.

It isn't even this ridiculous to get things out of the UK! I really feel badly for Woodleigh Bullets & Bertram Brass.

I really hope Mike and Steve succeed in their quest!
Woodleigh makes a great bullet and it would be great to have a reliable supply in the US.

A lot of them look like commercial brokers "fees", not government charges?

There is one outfit in Canada that sells Woodleigh bullets, but I don't think they export out of Canada.
www.tradeexcanada.com.

their Woodleigh bullets.

You will find that the related charges are mostly the same for one box...or ten thousand boxes.( excluding the actual freight charge based on weight not volume).
Again, to make the excercise economical you will need to buy considerable volume, not to mention making a considerable financial outlay.
Even then your local market moans over the cost of the product.
Many before you have been through this excercise, but have dismissed the idea due to the large commitment required...

As Steve Bertram imports Bertram brass these sorts of charges can not be new?

What are mandatory procedures for exporting bullets (and brass)? It never used to be hard when I did it last.

Again most of the above looks like brokers fees?

Some of them look like nonsense fees, ie just adding another line for another fee. Seen it before on my own bills eg taxidermy iumports/shipping fees. BS nonsense price fees to rip the customer off.

Hi John,
I import into the States regularly but focus my business on importing from the UK. While Bruce and I share a last name, I have never imported Bertram brass. I do use it in my 6.5x53R with good results.

It does seems that quite a few extra fees I do not typically see are required getting things out of AU. Seems the way of the world these days, extra layers of bureaucracy and added costs abound, especially in the firearms trade.

As I keep saying ... but my guess is that invoice was actually from a broker ???? Try a different broker. Or get each line of th invoice explained.

Padding out an invoice with nonsence extra lines and fees.

The invoice is a sample of a recent shipment sent to me by Woodleigh so I could get an idea of the overhead involved. While I certainly could call back and get a detailed explanation of the cost breake down, I would think Sally would know the most cost effective way of shipping. The seller usually sets up the shipping and outbound brokerage while the buyer/importer handle the inbound side of things.

OK Thanks Steve. No wonder the costs in the USA are quite a lot more than here.

Same as the opposite direction, costs of freight etc.

No criticisms meant. Hope it all works out for you and supply of Woodleigh bullets.
