still any love for the valmet 412/412s

was wondering if any are still using it?

im considering buying a double 9.3x74r plus a double 12 ga barrel single trigger and maybe another 412 with 222/ 12 ga in double trigger.

what are your thoughts?

too old or still good despite the age.

are the 12 ga barrels good to shoot steel shots in?

Don't know for sure, but expect the Valmet O/U shot barrel might be too tightly choked for steel shot.
The .222/12 bore is an interesting combination. I have an Antonio Zoli in that configuration, but haven't fired it yet.

Do a search. I have a Tikka 512 whgich is basically the same as the Valmet 412.

With double rifle barrels in 9.3x74R which I have used a bit in Australia and Africa. And double rifle barrels in .30-06 which I have not used.

Combination barrels in 12 gauge and .223 which I use a fair amount on my farm. Also a set of combination barrels in 12 gauge and 7x65R. I have not used it yet either, but will soon finally be getting some ammo for it.

12 gauge U/O barrels. I have used steel shot with it. But prefer lead shot.

My Tikka 512 used to have a single trigger. I had double triggers put it on it.

thank you very much. i took the risk of the old guns.

a combo barrel in 7x65r will be very interesting ...

Check the diameter of the choke at the muzzle. If it is tighter than about .705" (IMP Modified) I feel/think it is too tight for steel. .710" to .715" would be even better.
Some people think if the barrel is chrome lined, that it doesn't matter. Perhaps that is the case, perhaps not.

The 412 was not mfg with steel shot in mind. Having said that, the barrels are tough modern steel and quite meaty. So I would concur, anything up to a mod choke should be OK. Imp mod with smaller steel shot only ie no 4 and smaller. Full choke no steel at all. The chokes are marked on the side of the breech.

The later 512 was offered with 3" chambers and screw chokes and could be ordered with special "steel shot proof". Some were made with 3 1/2" chambers.

It's not an "old" gun at all, in the scheme of things.

But if you just want a shotgun (not a system gun), then there are lots of choices. The 412 and 512 are rather heavy as shotguns. About 8lbs!

I had a 333T Savage trap gun at one time, although I do not know the model of Valmet action they had. It shot extremely tightly with lead #5 1 1/4oz. Duck loads.
