Pity I can´t see the complete article, not a subscriber anymore. (Actually I stopped subscribing Rifle and Handloader around 2006 when both Barsness and Seyfried had left). I liked very much what Barsness was writing, now i´m curious what he has to say.
The Drilling discussion in Germany is more than a century old: is it really the all-around gun, or is it a compromise contraption that never can be ideal?

the 6,5x57R is not more than a 6,5x57 and so a rimmed cousin of the 6,5x55 swedish. the 6,5 is allways a litle bit on the bottom end for big game. of course, biggest deers and boar have been shot with the 6,5mm but people don't realy trust and you know - its all in your mind, also success.

As far as the 6.5x57R being a good all-round ctg. it can certainly do the job, however, I can not call it the ultimate.
I used to read Barnsness and Seyfreid, but actually liked Brian Pierce's articles same or better, usually. Much depended on the topic, of course. It was Ross who got me testing .44 Mag. pressure loads in my .45 Colt model 94 Trapper. Worked a peach on elk with 320gr. bullets @ 1,584fps.(Win. BP .45/90 Ballistics+)

I have that exact calibre/gauge combination in a Merkel therefore need no convincing on the suitability for medium game, small feral pigs up to about 60 KGs being the biggest game I have taken. Ballistics are the same as a 6.5x55, even the loading data can be used from the Swede for the Mauser cartridge, May not be an Elk or Moose hunting rig but fairly handy for the smaller game none the less.
