Ultimate fox medecine….
      #352032 - 05/04/21 10:57 PM

Or how to play and have fun with a .17 Remington.
The starting base is one of the very first Remington SA produced circa 1973 in this caliber, an interesting n.i.b version with a medium weight stainless steel barrel, virgin of any shot.
The rest of the story is just a gunsmith hobby to make it the dream tool to purge the vermin.
In the end, not much remains of the original rifle except its wonderful barrel that brings out the 20gr Norma V-MAX at 4200 ft/s in a single ragged hole.
There's not a fox who will complain!

Regards to all.

Very nice Joel/ Is it yours or for a client? Or on spec?

A rifle and cartridge very much in demand in Australia in those early days for the fox fur trade.

But no where near as nice and classy as this re-creation!

As again thank you very much for your support and participation on the NE forums amazing us with your quality work.

I want one of your rifles before you get too expensive!

I have never owned a .17 Remington. But it was as said much used on spotlight fox shooting for skins. Reportedly a broadside chest shot MIGHT damage the far side skin? I don't know. I lusted for a .17 K-Hornet. Never happened and continued with my carious and numerable .222s, .222R and now a .223. And .22 RFs and .22 M RFs. The sub-.22 centrefire or rimfire never acquired.

The rifle is way too lovely to "bang around" in the back of a utility on a frosty spotlight fox culling expedition.

BTW did do the daylight fox culling expedition with shotguns and drives, the last fox cull of the season a couple of weekends ago. 51 foxes removed from the farms. No furs unfortunately, as it is too early in the season for a decent winter furs. They are culled now before the young ones get older and smarter and just before the lambing season starts and poison baiting starts on the farms.

Joël,

Very nice build. Which floorplate, safety, bolt and bolt handle did you use?

This is the kind of question which is difficult to answer as there have been so many modifications to the various components.
This is not just an assembly of accessories but a partial construction.
For the side swing safety we use a Recknagel base that we have modified with a new lever, the bolt handle is an in house production and, as far as I remember, the floorplate is a US manufacture that we had to refinish and fully reshape.
The trigger is a Shilen BR, everything else is homemade.
This kind of work is quite fun and changes us from our usual productions which are more complex and more rigorous ... almost a vacation this little .17RM!

Very nice indeed. Back then Rem barrels where very good for accuracy at least that is what I have found so it is good that one is up to standard. I have never been a fan of the sub calibres but I could easily be persuaded to use the 17Rem if it was that rifle.

Some questions if I may. Is the action still the Rem action, modified?

Is the bolt the Rem bolt, modified?

Sincere congratulations my dear Joël on this new realization “just to satisfy the gunsmith’s hobby”; it is really the true example of how to turn a mass-production rifle into an epitome of classical elegance embellished with a touch of Dorléac & Dorléac! Foxes and other vermin will have to travel low profile from now on in the Pyrénées Orientales if they don’t want to die - albeit in style.

I don't think anyone could have put this better!
Mr D you have simply created a masterpiece the the likes of Remington or any other mass produced rifle could emulate, I hope though they take notes & design more so along your style, there will be far better looking rifles out there......but nothing of the quality of workmanship that goes behind such a creation!
I certainly hope you get to take this one out yourself for a hunting trip, any vermin that gets within your sights will definitely go out in style!
Beautiful work as always & yes John you better get your order in soon!
