Almost done with browning the WR.
      #351775 - 27/03/21 05:17 PM

A friend of mine is rebrowning my Westley Richards try gun barrels. He sent me a photo of them mostly finished with the browning and etching. I've owned and seen lots of damascus barrels and I haven't seen any with the jagged lines this one has.

It will be awhile. It's being re case hardened and the stock is being refinished. Some photos of when I first got it.

Many thanks for posting

Looking pretty nice, Casper. Is the browning solution still working or is that how they look oiled?

it has a coat of linseed oil on it. After a couple of weeks I'll put some more on them.

A friend is doing it for me. He is getting into gunsmithing big time and does this as well. I can pass on his name and contact if anyone would like it.

I'm happy so far with what I can see. Price isn't bad either.

What do you mean by "jagged lines"? Thanks.

I really like the result. You should be very pleased.

How do you plan to shoot the shotgun with damascus barrels as compared to a usual steel shotgun?

I have an old "Hollis" side by side damascus barrelled shotgun with hammers. I know its chambers are 2 1/2 inch chambers as compared to the usual 2 3/4" chambers. Dad shot it with the usual shells all his life, and so did I, but stopped when I realised the chambers were shorter. Then sourced some shorter Spanish shotshells. I quite like shooting it. It is a bit rough and needs a refurbishment, if it is worth doing. This Hollis brand was the cheaper one and not the resale value of a WR.

I must have a look at its damascus barrels.

All of my shotguns except my semi auto for ducks have damascus/twist barrels. I shoot them all. When I was living in England and Scotland I just bought regular 2 1/2" shells for them. They are all proofed for nitro. Now that I live in the states I have to reload my own lower pressure shells for them. I have just a few reloaded. I think I have 1200 16 ga 2 1/2" loaded and I'm not sure on 12 bore. Only have 2 boxes of 10 loaded. I use them mostly for grouse here in Alaska. Not much else to use a shotgun for up here.

that photo should be good enough quality for a blow up look. Look at the difference between the lines of the WR and this Parker.

My old Field London SxS gets 75gr. 1F GOEX in it's 2 1/2" plastic hulls along with fiber wad + 1 1/4ounce #7 1/2's for rendezvous trap shooting. I missed one bird out of 20 in 2019 BC Rendezvous.

Mine is an earlier gun - no smokeless for it.

The actual calibre stamps underneath the barrels, actually slightly dimpled the chamber bottoms. It's in wonderful shape, though, locks, stock and barrels.

The jagged lines in the patterns are very unique indeed.
