Sauer Double Rifles...
      #35151 - 28/07/05 08:25 AM

Today I was handling a nice little side by side boxlock extractor Sauer chambered in 9.3x74.
From the marks on the gun it seems to have been made in the mid 20's

It's cased, it has claw mounts and is scoped, and is in overall very good condition. The gun seems to have been stored well, the wood and metal have small handling marks, the muzzles are clean, the bores perfect.
Nice little rifle.

Anyone here own a boxlock JP Sauer and Sons double rifle?
How well do they stand up to use?
This one seems to have been on at least a couple of safaris, it's taken at least one elephant.
Threre's a couple hundred rounds of loaded ammo, as many projectiles of three or four types, brass, and two sets of dies.

The most interesting looking bullets in the pile were a spitzer type, nickel with hard copper points. I think they were 258 grain bullets, stamped with an R within a shield on thier bases. Very cool looking bullets. There were two vintages of RWS brass in the kit, what looked like older brass, with a slightly thinner rim and newer looking brass with extractor cuts and thicker rims. Also included are numerous pieces of Norma brass.

Any comments on these German doubles?

sounds like you've found a fine little hand-made gun by a well-known german maker. I wouldn't shy away from it, as i suspect comparable quality would cost you several-fold to replace today.

if you don't want it... please tell me where it is!!!

Oh you guys...

Yes indeed it's cute as a bug.
The cartridge has quite a bit of potential too.

I will likely be shooting it on Friday.

Of course, this interest is purely for her, a girl needs a good solid lightweight double rifle in her battery after all.

Maybe 9.3 mm 258 gr RWS H-Mantels?

A H-Mantel is not a true spitzer but will have a rounded point.

A couple of pics of H-Mantels

Second from top.

Hey thanks for the image there-

What I saw in the kit was more like the second from the bottom with the little step in the conical section, then going to a sharp copper tipped feature, but the bullet has a flat base.

Neat looking little bullets any way you look at it.

there was an older version of the RWS H- Mantel looking a little bit different, you may have seen this.

The gun is utter trash and is dangerous!!! It would make a nice companion to my J.P. Sauer cape gun, however... Why don't you protect your eyes and digits and arrange for MY buying it...just because I'm so thoughtful and am looking out for your safety.

I love my Sauer cape gun. I am covetous of that 9,3X74R DR!

Got out to the ranch this morning and managed to get a little time out to shoot the Sauer.

Of the assortment of ammunition there were two fresh boxes of factory loaded RWS 293 grain soft points whilch looked very much to be the H-mantel pictured above. The cartridges seem to be pretty old too, the price listed on the boxes was $21.00
I think the same ammo sells for about $90.00 a box today.
Over an old wooden tripod with a bean bag propped on top as a rest for my support hand I landed six rounds inside three inches, the barrel's groups overlapping, at fifty yards.
Each time I fired the rifle I'd walk it down to the target and note each p.o.i. and huff it back to the tripod bag rest for the next. I handled the rifle slightly differently each shot, getting familliar with the layout of the slender little gun and getting a sense of how the triggers felt with or without the single set feature.
Not so bad really.

Recoil was sweet, kind of a love tap with some extra push.
I think the load I was shooting was worth something in the 3600 ft/lb range too.
Really nice little gun.
