Geez, look how dirty the bores are. They are just black holes.

The outside looks very nice though.

OK Mickey, for you. Light at the end of the tunnel (or barrel). Or the fires of hell.

Sideplates showing the shallow "scratchings" (engraving) of an Indian water buffalo on each side

The rear leaf sight - graduated for 100 yards, 200 yards, 300 yards, 400 yards and 500 yards.
Now that is optimism.

The front sight

The butt stock.

The safety - in safe position.

From the other end this time. For those who don't like the business end photo.

Now if just I had some actual cartridges to use!

I saw the first picture of you pointing the rifle and started to send you my wallet. Then in the second post you show the sights to only 500 yards so I'm not afraid anymore because I live more than a mile from you.

That is a very nice looking, appears to be original, Jefferys. I'm sure that it will shoot very well once you get the wrinkles ironed out. Did you get loading info from the seller? I sent you my load and 450#2 has some loads for his Jeff also. Does he post here?

Looking forward to some pics of big holes in some skippys.

Mickey

Yes the seller said he has some loads, hopefully in ADI powders. Has promised to supply them,

I have some suggested loads from "NE 450 No 2" as well as yours. Thanks. I will have to see if non-ADI powders can still be sourced in SA. With these big cartridges if loads can be developed using ADI the cost savings could be quite high.

Hopefully I will be able to put some holes close together in some paper first. And then some hoppies may provide some good swinging practice. If all goes well some hogs may fall foul to the twin barrels in August.

Geez Nitro shame on you for not having that thing worn out by now!

I've had a good run with ADI AR2213 in a couple of doubles including 470 and using the good old Fed 215 magnum primers.
It sure works out a lot cheaper than IMR 4831 when the load is over 100 grains!

Since purchased, this rifle was christened "Zabardast" meaning Awesome in Urdu, a suggestion by my friend Iqbal on these forums.

Zabardast has managed to take three large water buffalo bulls, a scrub bull, some donkeys and pigs, a few deer, a couple of elephant cows and most recently a banteng bull.

So with the last it has come as close as possible to the engraved Gaur that is legally possible today.

Some more of the above is no doubt in its future.

But as a proven bovine slayer, cape buffalo eluded it in 2006 and will need still to fall to it, plus other bovines. Bison perhaps? South American or South/Sout-East Asian water buffalo? Maybe outback Aussie camels, if I can get close enough!

***

Wouldn't it be wonderful to know the history as well of these vintage rifles. Did it ever slay a tiger, an Indian elephant, perhaps a sambar, or even a Gaur? And in whose hands?

To play off the title of this thread, this rifle is a distinguished Gentleman in nature, yet has the lean, sinewy exterior appearance of a hardened veteran that knew how to manage himself.

Looks like the rifle fits you well John. Shoots where you look

Comments posted elsewhere.

Zabardast, my W.J. Jeffery .450 No.2 Nitro Express. Zabardast is Urdu for awesome. It's my bovine hunting rifle, elephant, as well as other game. Fires a 480 gr projectile at approximately 2,150 fps.

So far two tuskless cow elephant, a number of water buffalo bulls and other water buffalo. A nice banteng bull. Some scrub bulls. Donkeys, pigs, other game. Must use it more on other game if only for fun. Must one-day try some 350 gr projectiles in it and see how they can be regulated. Luckily I have some Woodleigh 350 gr RNSP Weldcore boxes on hand. My one only Cape Buffalo was taken earlier with my .375 Mauser 98. A .375 bolt action, makes a good second hunting rifle for more precise shooting.

As Bailey Bradshaw described it - "this rifle is a distinguished Gentleman in nature, yet has the lean, sinewy exterior appearance of a hardened veteran that knew how to manage himself." Spot on.

It's earlier life would have been in India. Indian Bison, Gaur, are plainly engraved on it. Perhaps suggesting it's use? One wonders what it has seen and been used on during its life? Rode on a howdah on an elephant's back? Used on tiger, leopard, Indian elephant, gaur, buffalo, Sambar deer, among other game? One imagines. Perhaps part of a Maharajah's armoury as a loaner? Or a civil servants prized hunting tool? Wouldn't it be great to know.

It's weight is awesome. A hefty 13 1/4 lbs, making it manageable to shoot. And strong muscles to carry all day needed. Lighter might be better, but it is what it is.

I remember hunting a herd of Cape Buffalo during my elephant hunt. We shadowed parallel the herd of buffalo in the Omay concession of the Zambezi Valley. Two elephant bulls fed through the trees just in front of us. The wind in our favour meant they never knew we were there only yards behind them.. Every now and again we had to wait to avoid bumping into the two elephant bulls rear ends! As the Cape Buffalo needed a shot from inside a herd, the PH swapped his scoped .416 Rem bolt action with me. If a shot had to be taken allowed a better shot to avoid other herd buffalo. However after maybe five viewings of the herd, a number of sizable horned buffalo bulls had been identified. Long trophy horns but none had the old mature solid bosses I demanded. So the buffalo herd was allowed to continue in peace. However a great hunt and experience.

I'm very comfortable shooting this rifle. And confident using it. Confidence is handy when facing an elephant waiting clearly behind a tree to ambush me as I rounded the tree. At a few yards. :~ However to my loss and luck, it changed its mind and fled instead.

Hopefully Zabardast will see action again one day in Africa. And no doubt hopefully a handfull more water buffalo, pigs, donkeys, pigs and what not.

Zabardast and Banteng, Cobourg Peninsula, the Top End of the Northern Territory of Australia. Zabardast has Gaur engraved on its plates. Banteng is the smaller cousin of Gaur. Probably the closest one can come to legally hunt gaur today. And also a worthwhile exciting hunt.

All the other photos? One day I'll have to dig out all the other photos, many never displayed on NE. Especially the Graham Williams buffalo hunts. And the pig hunt afterwards. More photos from the banteng hunt.

Going to have to search the external HDDs and folders. Sometime in the future.

A problem is I take the photos, and can't take photos of me using my rifles!

Great pictures John. I am very jealous of your Banteng. And, a super cool old rifle ( Baily’s comments described it perfectly ) Try your same full power load with 350 grain bullets. I recently acquired a 500/450 and I am having good luck with 350 and 300 grain bullets with my full house load.
Thanks for sharing

My banteng mount needs it's horns twisted out sideways. The taxidermist I used that one time has the horns pointing forward not sideways. Spoiks the mount imo.

Hi John.

Thanks guys for the comments.

In my big bore rifles I've tended to pick one bullet and stick with it.

For the .450 no.2 NE, the 480 gr Woodleigh Weldcore RNSP and RNFMJ.

The .375, 300 gr Woodleigh Weldcore RNSP and RNFMJ. The 9.3x74R 286 gr Woodleigh Weldcore PSP and FMJ. Ivecshotvsome lighter factory ammo in .375 and factory ammo in my .404. I've got boxes of other bullets on thanks for all of them.

As said I have boxes of .458 350 grs in a pile somewhere. I'd like to try them. Yes the 75% rule suggests using the full "100%" load.

I've not real interest in shooting lead bullets in it at the moment.

Rigbymauser, what do you shoot in a .450 re lead bullets? For hunting? How do they compare to jacketed?

If I don't have many 350 grs jacketed or they run out. And if Woodleigh or some other producer is not making? And if some other .458 lighter bullet can't be regulated, lead bullets might be an option. I've never made my own lead bullets. Perhaps when I get started I will try more. I've a .500 BPE I've never shot. The 10-bore still gathers dust. Potential starters. Plus a .577/450. .58 ML. Shotguns!

If the SHTF and supplies become harder to source, lead bullets might become more than handy.

Daryl, I don't have my eyes closed in any photos. I am very hotted and puffed up in the banteng image. Hunting in late November, hot and high humidity.

Deh0goins, I do like this old rifle. I must hunt even medium game with it for fun. Big dangerous game hunts are too few nowadays. A pig hunt in the future would be great. Even feral goats again. Roo culling on permit? Going to have to get close.

Thanks guys for the replies.
