458 is a cool cartridge.
Very versatile. Anything from powder puff loads with 300gr softs in the teens to the Barnes TSX 350 at over 2700 to stomper loads with 500s at 2150

They tend to be accurate too

Powder technology has come a long way in 60 years!
Winchester should have made a whole family of these cases on the short 2 1/2" belted case, missed a lot of opportunity then!

Many .458's have no trouble making factory and over 2,200fps with today's powders.

My .458 Alaskan Model 70 easily did it in a 2.1" case with a bit more capacity than the Win Mag., but using Win. Mag. data in 24" bl.

The .30/.338, used for a time as an intermediate US Mil. sniper round, easily duplicates the .300 Win. Mag. factory loads, as will the .300 H&H Mag.

During my visits to Africa you certainly still see a fair number of rifles chambered in .458 Win.. The last 3 hunts I did over there that was the caliber the PH as using ..
