Lyman 36 Sight - Images and Information
      #349634 - 24/01/21 05:27 PM

Hello, all.

I recently received the following PM from a NitroExpress member:

"Brian, the post that you made showing that Lyman sight for sale is a good one, obviously way to expensive. However I was thinking the following:

Would it be possible for you to start a new thread under the Mannlicher category with all the pictures from the ebay add as they are quite good and there are a lot of them. And then underneath that the pictures from LRF showing the sight he has made.

That way people like me who want to make one, as no one will send one form the US to Australia, can see both and have some good reference material."

----------------

Seems like a good idea, and also perhaps a 'catch all' thread where all members could post images and information regarding the Lyman 36 so Nitrox could archive them for future access / use?

As it is, I can't ever get the 'search' function of NE to function.

I'll start here with the sight fabricated by LRF of which he had posted excellent images and details to doublegunshop. This is of his own design and is not a Lyman 36:

The post - https://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=580048&page=3

Images - Not a Lyman 36 - This is LRF's own design and fabrication:

-----------------

And now images from Ebay listing referred to by the requestor. It is obviously a well used example yet it sold for $395 (after being listed at $775) USD.

I haven't any personal experience with the Lyman 36 as I do not own nor have ever used or handled one.

The Lyman 36 was similar to the Lyman 35 (as used on Mauser 98) but with the addition of a 'swing away' aperture arm which allows the MS' bolt handle to pass through on its journey through the split bridge which was, of course, not necessary with the Mauser.

Lyman 35 for Mauser:

The No. 36 could be mounted to the Mannlicher Schoenauer without permanent modification (as with the 35 on Mauser) as it simply mounts over the bolt release lever. They were / are very highly regarded sights of which I have never read or heard a negative review or comment.

A Google search for articles about the Lyman 36, however, turned up none. Perhaps a more in depth search of articles regarding gunsights of the period may prove productive.

I do have (of course) an image from the 1939 Stoeger of the Lyman 36 as advertised for sale:

The full page:

A bad copy of 1936 Lyman catalog page:

Below is pictured the instruction sheet that came with a 1950s era Lyman 36 and below that the NOS (NIB) sight:

A few dandy images of a Lyman 36 installed:

Note the 'swing away' feature - a marvelous bit of kit
The arm cams out of the way when encountered by bolt handle, then returns to zero.

Use the Search button in the Welcome panel (next to -Main Index-), rather than the search box in the main header, and it should work.
Same thing happens to me.
Can you fix this, John?

For those who don't know this, just centre the image on your screen and hit the "prt sc" button (print screen) top-right on your keyboard, and a 'save file' dialogue box will follow. Then scroll to the next image and repeat.
Then you will have all the images you want saved on your own pc (or in the cloud, if that's your thing).

If viewing on a mobile phone, there are options to snap-pic the screen. Same deal.

Hope this helps.

At the top of this thread are pictures of the M36 type I am making for my Steyr M1896 Mannlicher, however the first one I made was for my MS M1910 rifle. Here are some pics of it.

Really skilled work Lynn; one needs some practice and the appropriate equipment - to say the least, before reaching such a result!

This sight is neither for a 1950 nor any prewar Mannlicher - Schoenauer, but for a German M88 "Commission type" action, see the ejctor activating finger at the front of the bolt stop part. A buyer who wanted it for his M-S will be disappointed as it does not fit any M-S.

That is brilliant work LRF to say the least!
Something us mere mortals only wish we could do!
