A Stalking Double?
      #349388 - 18/01/21 06:49 AM

I just returned home from a local gun show, where I happened upon a really nice Double Rifle unlike any I had ever seen before. It was small and lightweight with short barrels (18" I think) and had a detachable scope along with a fixed and one folding leaf. It was chambered in 30-40 Krag. The seller reported that it was a pre war German build and called it a "Stalking Double".

I couldnt find any markings but I didnt have a chance to take a really good look at it. Ive arranged to meet with him next week for further inspection. I have to admit Im pretty interested.

30-40 Krag isnt high on my list of must have cartridges; but Im thinking its a good Whitetail even Wild Boar round, which is 90% of my hunting now.

Edelweiss,
all doubles look short, so there is a fair chance your barrels will be over at least 20".
I a lot of deer & pigs taken with the old .303, your Krag is well & truly in this class; wish you luck, I hope she shoots sweetly next weekend!

I'm interested in seeing photos of that Krag double rifle.
If you pass on it, I'd like to talk to the owner of it.

I wasn’t all that interested in the 30-40 either, then I shot mine.
What a pleasure to shoot and load.
An original German double chambered in the 30-40 seems unlikely but if it was regulated for the 220gr bullet it would be fantastic.

Im gonna see if we can work out a deal when we meet next week. I wasnt able to get anymore specifics today. Hopefully we'll talk before the weekend, Ill then ask for photos and more specifics.

I know doubles "look" short. When I spotted it, my first thought was that someone had put a scope on a 410 coach gun and when I shouldered it, I thought it felt like a 410 coach gun too!

We dont see too many DRs at gun shows around here, so I was excited. Finding it in 30-40 Krag was interesting too. If I have any complaints from the far too short time I examined it, its only that the scope is a fine crosshair, instead of the No1 post or No4 that Id prefer especially on a rifle Id expect for fast handling like a Stalking Rifle (but then Im the kind guy who'd complain if you hung me with old rope....)

.30-40 U.S Government also known as (and loaded by Kynoch as) .30 Purdey Nitro Express.

Might this one have been made for sale in India to get round the .303 military calibre ban?

I remember seeing at Holts some years ago a .30-40 double that had been converted to .30-06. If my memory serves me right it was a Westley Richards drop-lock and the conversion was fitted with their rimless extractors.
I felt what was gained in power was lost in originality.

30-40 to 30-06 seems a lot of work (rimmed to rimless). After reading about a 45-70 to 45-120 change on one of the Pedersoli DRs, I thought that sounded like an easy mod; but I never considered regulation issues.

That is really interesting.

I think a .30/40 Krag side by side, slim, balanced well regulated double rifle would make an ideal and fantastic choice for an American citizen wanting a vintage historic cartridge stalking DR for North America.

So much more interesting and unusual than a .30-06.

I see people often hope for a 220 gr RN regulation loading. I know I would prefer a 180 gr regulation loading. When I get around to regulating my Tikka U/O .30-06 DR barrels, I will probably go for a 180 gr Spitzer or RN. I usualy shoot 150 grs for medium game in my M98. Somtimes 180 gr spitzers. A 180 gr or 200 gr makes a good sambar choice and some of the bigger African antelope. And similar species. A 220 gr I probably would only use on buffalo and bovines.

Edelweiss,
Please post some photos of this rifle if you take any, or receive any. Thanks.
