I Finally Shot the .600 Nitro Express Pistol !
      #34889 - 20/07/05 01:59 PM

Videos of shooting the .600 Nitro Express pistol loaded on Nitroexpress.com

Yes, I survived, barely . . .

I've attached the info and video clips. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me.

If you haven't already seen the images of the pistol, they are attached to a previous posting (6-25-05); just search under my User ID as "Kamikaze".

600 NITRO EXPRESS PISTOL ~
Frame – Thompson Center-Encore Pistol, S.S., Rynite grip and forend
Barrel - Van Horn-Encore, S.S., 17.25” (14.375”) straight bull, special S.S. muzzle brake
Scope mount - SSK T’SOB, S.S. ¼ rib, 6-screws
4 SSK S.S. scope rings
Scope – Weaver Classic, recoil-proof silver, 2x28mm, pistol
Brass – Horneber, .600 nitro Express
Bullets – Woodleigh, .620”, 900gr, jacketed RN soft nose
Bullets – Beartooth, .622”, 1040gr, lead FNPB
Powder – Hodgdon H4831
Primers – Large Rifle magnum
Loading Data:
1040 grain lead bullet
117gr Hodgdon 4831 powder
1200 FPS Muzzle Velocity (14” barrel length)
3600# Muzzle Energy (14” barrel length)
Loading Data (Full Nitro Loads):
900 grain jacketed bullet
158gr Hodgdon 4831 powder
1670 FPS Muzzle Velocity (14” barrel length)
5550# Muzzle Energy (14” barrel length)

The first photo is a comparison table of some of the big bore cartridges that I've fired from pistols. Please note, the first cartridge on the left is NOT the .375 JDJ. I'll have to research my records to identify this one. Thanks to a knowledgeable viewer who correctly pointed this out to me.

The first video clip is me shooting the "light loads"! You may want to increase or zoom the picture size to get the full impact of this experience.

The 2nd clip is an interested party willing to experience it! Carefully, observe what happens to this guy, and the final facial expression !

As you will see, I dare not shoot the full Nitro loads.

The 18mb video clip file may take a minute to load up.

You are a God Damn WILDMAN! Your handle of Kamikaze certainly does fit!

Talk about awesome! That barrel looks like it almost hit you in the head during recoil.

Going to shoot it again?

I think wrist supports are in order!

Clark,

Someone will have to pay me (in advance) to shoot this pistol again ! Or, at least make it worth my while.

No, the pistol didn't hit my head, but when I looked at the video in slo-mo, sure looked like it. Must have just missed me. My right wrist and hand are a bit sore today.

The scope did suffer a bit of damage when it hit the concrete flooring. Not too worried about the scope, it's cosmetic only. The weaver scope and SSK mount held up very well considering what happened. I recommend this combination to anyone shooting a "handcannon". No damage to the gun.

Since chambering a pistol in .600 Nitro Express is practically uncharted territory, I've decided to ship the gun, fired brass, etc to the barrel maker for a quick inspection of the chamber, locking lug, and the frame just to be on the safe side. So, if I ever get the notion (or finishing off a 6-pack of Bass Ale) to shoot it again, I'll be confident in the pistol's safety.

By the way, the other shooter kept the paper target as a momento.

Hey, how big are these videos? I'm on dial-up and don't want to lock up my poor-ol'-pc with a large download, 3-4 Megs?

Bob

You should get Saeed to include them with his 577 T Rex videos on AccurateReloading

The second video with the pistol flying out of shooters hand is as good as it gets.

As a side note, there was posted up quite some time ago some German gunsmith that had made a full working revolver in 600 Nitro. From memory it weighed about 12 pounds. No videos of it being shot just pictures.

All that sort of stuff makes spotlight shooting rabbits with a 460 seem like a perfecty normal everyday activity

Mike,

Thanks for the info on AccurateReloading.com. I enjoyed some of the comments. I wasn't expecting this to get around to other Forums.

The one guy posted stating the gun hit my head, etc. I think he needs to read my later posting on the actual physical damage.

I am in the process of registering with accuratereloading.com to reply to their comments and hopefully give them the straight skinny.

Any other forums I need to know about?

Mike,

I talked to the guy in Austria, at Pfeifer-Waffen who is the manufacturer of the .600 NE revolver. The gun is a 5-shot, weighs 13.5 lbs, costs $18,500 USD (plus tax, plus import charges, plus the import FFL fee), and I can't remember if he said 6 months or 18 months for delivery. I didn't ask him wether or not he was shooting standard double rifle loads or light loads. By the way, my gun weighs only 7 lbs.

Pretty serious piece of artillery!
About a year ago there was an article in the news concerning a young boy killed when a magnum revolver struck him in the head.... Not trying to rain on anyones parade but just be careful with that thiing!

Bob,

I cannot think of any Texans who would care to actually try that handgun. I can think of a few who would goad someone else into trying it.

It took me 3 hours to download the film clip and after seeing it I would hope you don't intend to shoot that thing again unless you come up with a .600 Special using cases that are only 1.5" long or so...

Richard.

Stop talking about this video...I''m on dial up and can't load it! I wanna see!!!

I am in a third world country called Northern Virgina and am not able to get DSL. Now If I was still in Montana 25 miles from the nearest town-3000 pop. and 1 1/2 miles from the nearest neighbor I could have DSL. But here 30 miles from the Nations Capital among a million or so people, no DSL!

Anybody got the video on disc who might share?

A little while ago a 12 year old child was killed in North America someplace when he shot a single action handgun in some hot (but sane) caliber - it recoiled up and hit his head. Were you hoping to lose the use of an arm to avoid military duty? Were you figuring on collecting on a disability insurance policy?

jgttechjunkie,

Nope, already did my time (Vietnam Vet). Oddly enough, my other handcannon is an Encore .50-140 Sharps Pistol. Using the max load (100 grains) with the 700 grain bullet, the scope made contact with my upper lip; no injury.Mainly because I wasn't expecting the recoil.

With the .600 Nitro, I was expecting severe recoil, so I was thoroughly prepared to move my head and had a more forward and stiffer stance. Since I was concerned only about shooting and surviving the .600, I wasn't concerned about accuracy, thus causing me to miss the target to the right.

I'm on dialup with only 31 k connection. It took maybe 12 to 18 minutes to download each. Just set it to "save as" and went and did other things. Came back later to watch it.

Worth seeing.

In reply to:

Loading Data (Full Nitro Loads):
900 grain jacketed bullet
158gr Hodgdon 4831 powder
1670 FPS Muzzle Velocity (14” barrel length)
5550# Muzzle Energy (14” barrel length)

I thought I might run the above data through a recoil calculator. Assuming a 4 lb pistol.

A mere ............................................

Recoil Energy of 306 foot pounds, and Recoil Velocity of 70 fps.

The same load through a 16 pound double rifle ...............

Recoil Energy of 76 foot pounds, and Recoil Velocity of 18 fps.

I think the 600 Nitro in a pistol is getting close to the stage of deciding:

1) Do you hold the projectile and shoot the pistol

Or

2) Do you hold the pistol and shoot the projectile

I got the CD... two questions?

Did you get cut?

Did the 600 NE achieve low earth orbit after the range officer shot it?

Thanks for sending the CD, I have now crossed the 600 NE off my want list for handgun calibers.

Thanks once again.

Anyone know the easy -no brain- way around this little internet video playing thingy?

I had to download an update for quicktime to play the videos, then, no problem.
: The second guy to fire the 'beast' must have had a very loose hold for his hands to be almost unmoving, but then, I shot an 8lb. .505 Barnes Supreme - once. and that almost jumped out of my hands. It certainly spun me around like a weather-cock. That .600 Nitro handgun is certainly beyond me trying anyting similar.

Kamikaze,

Seeing that you're in Illinois, I should invite you to bring your pistol to next year's BGRC shoot. I went this year and am addicted as you are sure to be in the most friendly gathering of Big Bore afficionados in this part of the US.

BTW if you visit Chicago, you're always welcome to join me for some beers in the evening. I live off Devon Avenue on North Sacramento.

BTW did you choose the "Kamikaze" ID because of your experiment with this pistol? Just joking....

Ah, so I got it with the media player at last...

I've shot the contender and encore pistols, and really I always thought the bore axis was a tad high, even with something like .223 it still seems like the gun would benefit with a higher grip.

Mabye if you pattern your next .600 nitro pistol on something like a Hammerli or Finewerkebau free pistol you'd be able to get a better handle on that dreaded muzzle flip...

I'm impressed.............very impressed. I shoot the Encore Pistol in 416 Rigby (Federal Safari Loads) and I really enjoy it. I also thought I had some bragging rights by shooting it..........well, I guess not.

Bragging rights [Re: jlbell]
      #41129 - 10/11/05 08:00 AM

You should consider your bragging rights intact there.

Those two chaps *shot* the six hundred nitro.

You *shoot* your four sixteen rigby -- and will likely continue to do so.

Shooting the .600 Nitro Express Pistol AGAIN! [Re: jlbell]
      #45231 - 30/12/05 04:44 AM

jlbell (and others),

As soon as my schedule allows and can get out onto the range, I will be shooting the .600 nitro pistol again. If there's enough interest, I will do another video clip. Chances are, due to safety concerns (for inexperienced shooters), it will be only me shooting. Now, that I know what to expect (in recoil), I will be better prepared.

As far as "bragging rights", everyone has a threshold. Even if your max is shooting a firearm for the first time, anyone who has done what they set out to do, has the right to brag about what they have accomplished.

I guess, I could brag about the numerous big bore pistols I've shot (and survived), but no one really cares about that. The .600 Nitro Express being a rare animal (especially in a 7-pound handgun) is what captures the imagination of most.

For those who who "dare" to think about shooting something a little bigger, with more kick, more boom, or just going to the range and having everyone there look in your direction when you touch-off your handcannon. For those who just wonder what it would be like to have all that "power" in your hand. Even those who have fired, and still think the Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum Revolver is the most powerful handgun in the world.
Because you have gone one step beyond anyone else who hasn't, I APPLAUDE YOU!

Shooting the .600 Nitro Pistol was just the latest (and most interesting) of my escapades. Who knows where it will end?

Is there a Club for Big Bore Handgun Shooters? The kind of club that has T-shirts, ball caps, and a patch?

Bob (Kamikaze)

Bob:

My hats off to you! Takes grit to shoot it again after your first outing.

I don't know if I'd shoot the .600 NE or not. I was told you couldn't shoot the .416 Rigby (encore pistol) off a bench without breaking a wrist.........HA! .416 is a piece of cake. You can shoot it one handed (offhand) without a problem..............600 is another story. I enjoy the big bore handcannons and I would really like to see the .600 shot again, now that you have an ideal what to expect. Keep us informed.

Bulldog,

I guess .700 NE in a pistol is certainly "possible". You would have to be careful of the pressures developed and the type frame you choose to chamber the .700 NE. Carefully calculate the pressure and velocity from the combination of type powder, charge, type bullet (jacketed vs. lubed-lead), and bullet weight (and of course the empty portion of the loaded case).

The .700 would be physically too large for the Thompson-Center Encore frame. I'm not sure what base frame would be suitable in dimensions or material strength. I imagine a custom made single-shot or revolver is necessary.

I would be more concerned with the chamber pressures than the bullet velocity or accuracy. (At least initially).

Bob,

I shot some trap at the Aurora Sportsmen's Club and learned that thatw s where you shot your little monster bore. I hope to join this year some time and if I do, shall look forward to seeing your gun there.

It is a fantastic club and has some of the friendliest members I have ever met - and every gun club I've been to in the US has been extremely friendly.

Cheers!

Back Again, .600 Nitro Express Pistol [Re: NitroX]
      #61797 - 28/08/06 04:32 AM

Hello Everyone,

Just a little FYI and clarification.

I had been e-mailed by numerous people all over the world (literally) concerning the video clips and the numerous forums and websites the clips somehow ended up on. I browsed the various forums, reading the comments and found they were both amusing and somewhat baffling.

Each forum seemed to have a different twist on the background and chain of events for the videos: such as, who the owner of the pistol was, stating the 2nd shooter was me (the gun owner), that we were both injured, the pistol was damaged, it was a .50 BMG pistol, no it was a .700 Nitro pistol, no it was a .500 S&W, it was a "Display Only" pistol (not meant to be fired) or "For Show Only" pistol (again built by a gun maker not meant to be shot), various bullet weights, various muzzle velocities and energies, etc., etc., etc.

Some even tried to compare my pistol which was built on a T-C Encore frame (weighing in at 7-1/2#) to the Zeliska .600 Nitro revolver which weighed considerably more (can't remember if it was 12# or 14# - I chatted with the manufacturer in Austria about the specs). Thus, the recoil would be considerably different. Also, the Zeliska sells for $18,000 USD plus shipping, plus import taxes, mine considerably more affordable.

After reading the various Forums, I stopped counting at something close to 17,000 hits on the video and comments about the video.
50% of the Forum participants understood and knew the thoughts behind making such a pistol. Some admired, some envied, some awe-struck.
30% understood but admonished me for having it made (since they considered it useless). The remaining 20% missed the point altogether, where they rattled on about something insignificant and irrelevant. Often they would make a comment inferring their knowledge of (or lack thereof) my pistol or what REALLY happened at the range.

1. It was a .600 Nitro Express caliber (just like on a Safari)
2. Custom Beartooth lead bullet - .622 inch, 1040 grains, flat nose
3. The powder was 4198 at 117gr (158 grains for 900 gr FMJ bullet)
4. Stainless steel Thompson-Center Encore frame .
5. Custom made and fitted Van Horne 1-inch (14"L) stainless steel barrel. 17-1/8" total barrel length with brake.
6. Custom Van Horne (3-3/8"L x 1-3/8" diam) muzzle brake made especially for this pistol (and it's removeable).
7. Approx. 2-1/2# trigger pull (very light).
8. Four (4) SSK scope rings on a SSK T'SOB scope mount (4 mounting screws).
9. Weaver Classic stainless recoil-proof 2x28mm scope.
10. T-C Rynite grip.
11. 7-1/2# total weight
12. No one was injured. Shooter #2's shooting glass were broken in 3 pieces.
13. Shooter #1 was me, the owner (the one who went stage left).
14. Shooter #2 (the portly fellow) was the curious Range Master who didn't heed my instruction on how to grip the pistol. Note my stance (and grip) versus his.
15. I had the gun made for the following reasons:
a. I LOVE big bore handguns and rifles. The power, uniqueness, etc.
b. Anybody can shoot a .22, or .38, or .45, etc., but not many can (or willing to) shoot a .50+ handcannon.
c. I am a Police Firearms instructor, Range Master, and ex-competitive shooter, and love a challenge.
d. It's never been about hunting, accuracy, user-friendliness, etc. I don't hunt. I rarely target shoot anymore. I don't care if someone calls me an idiot, insane, or slams me on a Forum. They are entitled to their opinion, as I am entitled to mine. People enjoy their .22's, or wearing camo underwear to bed, or owning horses, or driving their shiny new 2-story high 4-wheel drive pickup truck into a muddy bog completely covering their truck (inside and out) with mud, . . . just as much as I enjoy my .600 Nitro, my Indian motorcycle (not a Harley), etc.
e. I've always collected unique or one-of a kind "things". Whether it's procelain, guns, coins, motorcycles, bronze figurines, etc. As long as it's unique and I like it, I buy it or in the case of the always nagging engineering or scientific question: "Why not?" or "Why can't it be done?" or "It's not quite what I want, why can't I have it this way?"

f. BRAGGING RIGHTS! (mine's bigger than yours, ETC, ETC, ETC). Just kidding! - one of the readers posted that comment.

When I had the gun made, it was never my intention to post the videos and photos, or even to gain any notoriety. The video clips were posted because one of the readers requested I do so. So, I did.

I hope this clears things up for some of you. If so, pass this info onto the other Forums. Maybe, I'll read some new comments.
Thanks for reading this rambling dribble,

Kamikaze

kamakazee,

I think the 600 handgun is great. Other people must think so too since there have been 17000 hits on it. I had alot of backlash when I had a 460 weatherby 12" bl encore made. I shot full house loads through it and got 500 grain bullets out to 2088 ft./sec. for 4835 ft. lbs. My gun weighs 4lbs. 8oz. and recoil was absolutely horrendous. I have to admit I did hurt myself and the gun came apart on the first shot. I had it repaired and shot it twice more and it stayed together. I did not get physically hurt on the last two shots, but I have no intentions of shooting it again. Recoil was still extremely harsh, and I shoot alot of big handguns.I guess its crazy, but it still interests me (and others I'm sure). When and if you shoot the 600 again, I would like to see more videos.

I live between Carbondale and Marion. About 2 hours southeast of St. Louis. Absolutely, it can't be as bad as that 460 weatherby pistol. Lets let it get a little warmer and we can try to plan something.

Well, I worked out a deal with Kamakazii to get the 600 nitro pistol and the 50-140 sharps from him. They will make a nice addition to go with my two encores in 460 weatherby, and 30-378 weatherby. We are going to shoot them , along with my 700 nitro in May sometime.

500 grains,
It can't be worse than my 12" 460 weatherby. The 600 has another 800 ft.lbs of energy, but it weighs 7 1/2 lbs instead of 4 lbs. When my 460 stayed together on the last 2 shots, it was possible to do but it was ferocious recoil, but doable. This is just a gun to have and shoot a little. Not a practical hunting gun at all.

The only reason the gun goes flying over the range instructors head is because he is stupid. The original owner told him how to hold and shoot the gun, but the guy thought he knew better. He has one hand on the forearm which is absolutely useless. The gun can be handled and shot properly with a tight two handed hold on the grip.I have shot it several times and while the gun has tremendous recoil, it is quite doable. But look at it this way. The big instructor that has the gun fly by his head is famous. The video has been viewed over a million times on you tube. When I taped shooting the same gun a couple of times it got about 60 views. It was nothing special because I fired and held on to the gun.The video was not nearly impressive. I still think it is fun to shoot, even though it is on the impractical side of things.

There are videos on youtube of that one being fired too-or at least, there were. Other than the sheer size it looks pretty tame-but with the weight of the thing you won't be firing it unsupported.

As for me shooting monsters like that I think I'm at my limit of handgun with my .45-70. It kills deer well but I'm done shooting after 5-10 rounds. It's the last gun that gets uncased on the range.

None of those links worked for me, but it doesn't matter. I recall watching both the owner Kamikaze and the heavy dude both shot the handgun - original videos, I guess.

I also cringed at the way that fellow held the gun and almost wore it in the face as it as it flew back over his right shoulder - then clacked on the concrete floor - sounded like it.

Knew it was a .600 Nitro & seem to remember the lead bullet was supposed to be doing about 1,600fps (IIRC)

Hell of a load for a handgun - no thanks.

I have shot a .500 S&W with factory ammo. The gun had a vented barrel - think 5 or 5 1/2" long bl. It had less recoil than my 4" with the short, fat round butt grips - 300gr. Truncated Cone commercial lead and 22gr. W296.

The .44 stung like a wasp sting in the palm every shot - made me say OUCH!

That big .500 was "almost" pleasant, in comparison - almost. It was still hard on the arthritis in the wrist, but - like said, not as bad as the much lighter .44.

Weight and ergonomics makes SUCH a big difference.

NO way would I fire either of those guns, BigDogs or Kamikaze's. Good on them, though!

One thing I've always wondered-why a removable brake instead of permanent? The brake brings it to over 16" length-if permanently installed it would be legal to shoot with a stock-whether or not you ever did. IMO, if it's that long anyway why not add one more legal use?
