I just got this venerable and experienced Merkel 90 in 12/12/7X65R, topped with a 3.5-10 Leupold. It's heavy and will be my "truck gun" drilling.
These Merkel 90s have my favorite safety/selector system.

Now that is a wonderful piece you have there L2S!
So what if its over engineered, its in a great rifle calibre to boot as well.

Looks good L2S.
Do you have any idea what the year of manufacture was .
It looks a bit different to the safety, rifle barrel cocking combo on my own and my son has an earlier model than mine and it looks different to yours as well but may be similar in operation.
I believe they were never really meant for wing shooting , but they certainly work well on running pigs with buckshot and the rifle for an third quick shot or more distant targets.

A friend of mine has a Merkle O/U in 16 bore and 7x65R.
His rifle absolutely loves the 160gr. TTSX Barnes bullet. I have no idea what his load happens to be.
With the really skinny barrels on those combo guns I'm not sure I would shoot the mono-core bullet in them.

This Merkel is a bit heavy to use much as an upland gun. The date code is 2KF, so it's February 1995.
On the other hand my Kreighoff 16/16/7X765R Dural is a nimble bird-killer.

I'm not brave enough to test mono's in my drillings, but the guys at Hornady feel banded bullets should be OK. The techs at Nosler told me the same thing.
Ackley would probably have shot them. He said the bullet is fully sized to the bore in the first few inches of travel. This would presuppose that the bore is uniform the whole way along. I would assume they are in modern drillings, but my experience with many pre-war guns showed me those bores are anything but up to modern standards.

LOL...I drive a 15 year old Chevy 1/2 ton with 200K on the odo. It frees up drilling money.

LOL - I don't even have a "truck gun".
I do have a 2015 F350 6.7 Lt, Diesel, though. It's an OK truck.

Back in the good old days of my youth, we used to carry a Slazenger single shot in .22 RF as the "ute" gun. It lived behind the seats. Sometimes an old hammer 12-bore side by side. The .22 hardly ever left the ute.
In the days before communist gun laws designed to keep everyone safe and limit access to firearms ,,,
Our "truck guns" were not these nice drillings!
