M98 custom in .405WCF
      #347141 - 25/11/20 02:11 PM

I picked up a very nice custom M98 in .405wcf during the shutdown.

Anyone else out there have one or seen one?

Pictures coming.....

Nicely built. Interesting is the stepped barrel in front of the receiver.
No - I've never before seen a Model 98 in .405 Winchester.
Have you shot it yet?

Thanks for sharing, nice looking rifle.
A couple question if I may, what modifications were made to the follower and bolt face to accommodate the rimmed cases? How many cartridges fit in the magazine?

Stunning pick up NorthGaAire - lovely work all over to say the least!
Well there is a flea's whisker between the old .303 & .405 Rim Diameter; but the important thing is that the .455 OAL will fit in a normal M98 magazine easily.
A sloping mag will most certainly help like the Siamese Mauser does.
With the Mauser its strength will certainly boost the .405 into a pretty powerful beast, not that the '95 Winchester is a slouch in that department either.
Hope to see what she'll do, don't forget your loading notes when you get a chance to do so.
Lucky bugger!

Is this built on a Siamese action? I would think that would work fine, but to get it to work on a standard '98 action would be a nightmare; maybe impossible.

I’ve seen a couple ‘98s chambered in 303 by Greener.
Pretty sure the main thing is to be mindful that the rim of each cartridge stays ahead of the last round when loading.
That’s where a slant mag makes all the difference. IIRC, those Greeners could only hold three down because of the straight mag.

This action has the square magazine box, it looks to me.
Thus, rim position is most important.

I've seen a P14/M17 in 405 but not a Mauser.

Lots of good questions and the reason I posted with my questions. Rimlock can be a real issue. I hope the owner checks his post soon and helps us out with more information

My Lee Speed with the Harris patent charger is very similar.
I can just drop the cartridges in the magazine, release the lever, and they rack right up.
Somehow they all line up properly!

hey Huvius:
Didn't realize you had one of the few remaining Harris patent Lee Speeds too, they're a fairly rare variant by all accounts.
Also known as Punchard's magazine filler for some reason that I have been unable to determine (if you can shed any light...?)
Certainly works beautifully on the 1905 Ross, makes me want to start looking for one!

Apologies for minor thread hijack, back to the .405.
Without something equivalent to the Harris (Punchard) filler, rim discipline would not be something you could count on IMHO, especially in the hunting field, and under recoil.
Personally I would not trust rimmed cartridges in a straight mag box M98.
...in agreement with most everyone here by the looks!

Edited: My ailing memory Huvius, apologies!
We had a discussion about these Lee Speeds over a decade ago. Did you ever toss photos of yours up on the forums?
Here's the link to my example. Might be of some interest here given the usefulness of the Harris Patent for rimmed cartridges.

The way he put those in, they appeared to line up properly, being 2 at a time.
With a Mauser, it is imperative they do.
I recall having a rifle that they got 'stuck' in due to one rim ahead of the one above. However, I do not remember the particulars - the rifle nor the ctg. Happened in the 70's????I wonder if it was a P14? could have been. & my sloppy loading.

Yes indeed!
The only Lee Speed I own - always on the lookout though.
This rifle shoots everything I’ve sent down the barrel. Squirrel through the head at 50yds is plenty accurate for me.

I do like your Mauser .405 WCF. Elegant profile and beautiful wood.

Can you share with us the barrel length? I am curious about the velocity potential.

You should be able to attain very effective velocity with bullets from 300 to 400 grains to take any animal on the globe. I am a fan of the .405 WCF and have 3 of them, here are the two .405 rifles that I hunt with:
Winchester 1895 with 24 inch barrel:

Simson Suhl .405 DR with 24 inch barrels has express sights, QD peep, and QD scope:

Mine is a K98 - not a Siamese.
It does feed very well with the normal consideration for rimlock.

vykkagur,
Re-reading this old thread reminded me that there is a very detailed thread on the Simson Suhl .405 DR that was begun by the gunmaker when he finished the rifle. I can start a thread here to the original one.

My Miroku/Winchester 1895 TD .405 WCF has taken a lot of game in the USA and Cape Buff and warthog in RSA and most of that posted on various web sites. I can post a link on prepping the rifle for 400 grain Woodies and taking the buff in RSA if you like.

Those two threads should provide much detail and some basis for discussion. Let me know if interested and I will work on it tonight.

PS, glad you like the rifles.
