Another English Retailed Mannlicher #3
      #348179 - 20/12/20 02:57 PM

I’m very happy to share this recent acquisition.

A Model 1900, left wall marked 1901.

Again this example goes to demonstrate the very close business relationships, not only with trade outworkers, but also between makers themselves.

Built by Gibbs and allocated # B3431. It was one of two delivered to Purdeys by George Gibbs in 1902.
Often when guns are bought in and retailed in this way the information, or records are very thin. In some cases non-existent.
This is certainly true of my other two Purdey retailed Mannlichers.
On this occasion Purdey has kindly been able to provide the buyers name and can confirm the Rifle was sold for a price of 15 Guineas in 1903.
This may mean that such purchases were for inventory, as opposed to an order for a specific customer??
The Buyer was a Scottish gentleman. And it’s probably reasonable to assume the Gibbs/Purdey was intended as a stalking rifle.
I initially felt quite certain the Lyman peep sight was a later addition by perhaps a subsequent owner. I was wrong.
The record does confirm it was certainly supplied and probably fitted by Purdeys.
Purchased with, and additional to the cost of the rifle was:

• Lyman sight ( 30s)
• Mail canvas case ( 35s)
• Name painted on case (4s)
• Moleskin cover and cleaning accessories ( 1 12s 6d
• 300 x 256 cartridges

( if anyone has a full length Purdey case with a Scottish name to the lid , id be happy to hear from you )

This rifle has all the hallmarks of an early Model 1900. The question of how early will not be answered until I have the rifle to hand.
However further to my post for " Another English Retailed Mannlicher #2 " of 13/1019 where Axel ( Kuduae) references his Gibbs # 3452.

He reports that to be the second earliest Model 1900 known. Given this earlier Gibbs example # of B3431 this may (or not) indicate an even earlier Steyr number than 98?? Purdey also retailed Axels rifle and may well be the second one bought in by Purdey in 1902.
Apologies for the lack of photos, more to come later, along with an update on the Steyr number.

Eric

Hello Paradox

If you can pm me with the name of the original Scottish owner of your rifle then I can look him up in my 1905 copy of Kelly's Directory of the landed Classes.
