1891 Argentine Carbine project???
      #348048 - 18/12/20 01:49 AM

I go into work everyday and look at a project waiting to come home with me. Its a 1891 Argentine Carbine in VG condition. Its matching BUT missing the handguard and the front sight protector/bayonet lug. Its on consignment and a tad overpriced in my mind ($400). The replacement parts are available for about $100 but the owner wont consider dropping the price or buying the parts. Sooooo it sits.

The more I look at it the more I either want to fix it OR go full old school sporter. Id like to scope it with a classic scope in twist off turrets....and a butterknife bolt handle.

I suppose I could use a second bolt and preserve the original and maybe skip the scope. At least then I wouldnt be permanently altering the piece?

Seems to me, Norma makes the ammo/cases for that, 7.65x55, however, does anyone else?
$400.00 seems a bit high, to me too.
I can buy a nice Husky M1600 for that, in .300 mag., 7mm mag., 30/06 or 8m Mauser.

YES $400 is high, especially since its not complete. It would already be mine if it was $300 or even $400 if he paid for the parts to restore it. The owner is a bit peculiar and he got the guns from his father's estate. He doesnt have a clue; but worst "thinks he does"...

Its been sitting there for about 5 months and I have to look at it everyday and picture what Id do with it. FMJ and Soft point ammo is available still relatively cheap (because its not a popular round). I figure if I bought the rifle, Id buy 2000 rounds and my kids would be shooting it when Im dust.

I love project guns. It lets me design it for me and anticipate it while Im waiting for the gunsmith work. For this one, I can shoot it while Im waiting for the butterknife handle to be out on the spare bolt. Im still not sure about the scope part

I hear you lancaster, but all that was important when I wore a younger man's clothes.

for years now I have the fixed idea that the M 91 action

can be sporterized like a M 88 action

like this

or maybe like this

the mauser brothers were thinking highly of the 7,65x53 and would have choose it against the 8x57
