Time for confessions. How many of us with big bores use them for something other than the "big nasties". I didn't want to highjack the other thread so I started this one. I like to use my .375 on varmints for a couple of reasons. It gets me used to the rifle and it is great target practise. Also I flat like shooting varmints. Yes, it makes a prairie dog look like a hairy donut when you can find the carcass. I find after shooting prairie dogs with my big game rifles & loads it is usually a one shot kill on deer & elk.

My very first biggie was a 458WM and I'd shoot squirrels with it. You know how squirrels like to conceal themselves on a thick branch, no problem, just shoot the branch and the critter just comes down in a couple of pieces. I used to have the time to drive out where I could just spend the whole day practicing on any running little critter I came upon. When you gotta work to build your poke before retiring, most things have to get back-burnered. Besides that, I've been trying to save for my first safari for over two years.

I like to use my Whitworth .375 H&H on meadow grizzlies (ground hogs), and garden raiding cottontails. I once shot a skunk with it, and I assure you I won't make that mistake again.

My .375's are used mostly on coyotes and for removing the heads of jackrabbits.

Call me crazy (or just plain addicted to big bores) but I LOVE shooting varmints with my bigger guns. To me springtime means ground squirrels and rock chucks and lures me to NE Oregon 2 or 3 times from March to May every year.

Sure, I do most of my shooting with my various small bores but I really look forward to blasting the little critters with my heavies. In the "bigger" category I've shot squirrels with my 338 Lapua, 375 H&Hs, 416 Rigbys and my favorite, the 458 Lott. I learned bullet selection is critical in attaining proper terminal performance. With the Lott, solids and X bullets aren't the best for ground squirrels...complete pass throughs with minimal damage When I switched to the lowly Rem 405gr FP I discovered total, complete satisfaction with its on target effect. Total grins and oohs and ahhs from my buddies as something different and awesome occurs. It just doesn't get any better than this. My 17 Rem and 220 Swift frags them for sure, but the Lott with the flat point round puts an exclamation point on it, doing it with a certain panache if you will.

On the last trip this year, my bud and I went through over 2000 17HMR rounds and hundreds of smaller centerfire rounds. I shot almost 100 Lott rounds. I can recall almost all of the Lott shots and they are the most memorable ones of the trip. Next year I will take 200 rounds of Lott per trip.

So yes, I'll fess up and admit to using my big bores for other than DG

John

About bloody time I have found people with similar perversions to mine. I often hunt pigs ,dingos and other non dangerous game with my 458 Lott. Occaisionaly I will take out my little 300 WBY pop gun but prefer walking around with my big guns. I had a run in with an old timer a few days ago at a gunshop. He noted that I was selling my 458 Win and he said how bloody useless they were ,no one can possibly handle them. When I said I was selling it because I mainly use my 458Lott. He gave me a long mouth full about using big guns to make up for poor shooting. The gunshop owner backed me up when he said what groups my big guns give and that I seem to shoot better off hand with my big guns.
It is nice and comforting going hunting with the big guns. Plinking by shooting at ant hills (termite mounds) gives much better results when using 500gn solids than the next persons 243.

If you will allow that the average varmint in my neck of the woods is a feral pig weighing between 50 and 100 kilos, then yes, include me in this category! The only legal 'small-game' in the Top End of Oz is the feral cat, but thay are not commonly seen and can't be planned. If buffalo are on the cards, which is 99% of my hunting, I carry a double over .40-cal. If a feral cat does happen to step up, naturally it gets acquitted with whatever I'm carrying!

I do wish we had conies up here, though!

That stuff makes me want to walk out of the shop early and poke an ice pick through his tires.

It annoys me greatly when those bastards I don't even know give me the lecture about how I prefer a .375 to compensate for lack of ability. What is really strange is that I hear it mostly from the crowd that tries to turn a Marlin .45-70 into the .458 Walmart Magnum.

Richard.

Ignore them. Some people don't feel good unless they are critisizing someone. I think it makes them feel more powerful.

There are a lot of dumbasses out there who can't shoot anything 338 and up. Because they can't shoot anything bigger than 30's, they ASS-U-ME that you can't either. As WyoJoe says, it's better to ignore them as they are worse than any anti-gunner out there because you can't reason with them. Why get your blood pressure up to the 200's over nothing?

Interesting that you mention .338 and up...years ago when I was a poverty stricken university student working at a gun shop, the owner wanted me to sight in rifles chambered in any calibre over .30...which at the time meant .338 and up....strangely he was willing to sight in anything smaller.

I've shot quite a number of pine (red) squirrels with 484gr. balls from my 14 bore - grouse too, does that count?
: My .458 took 34 grouse one fall - none wounded and lost. ;-)

My first ZKK602 BRNO was a .358 Norma Mag, which was useed almost exclusively on coyotes on a far near Smithers, B.C.
: After transfering south, I used it with cast bullets for 3-position competition, then re-bareled with a brand new .375H&H barrel. This one was also used with cast bullets in the same competition circuit until I built up a full-bore match rifle in .308Win.
: Both the .358 and .375 barrels were 3/4 MOA rounds with those light squib loads and WW bullets using the rifle's pop-up peep sight.
: After selling the .375BRNO to an Island lad, he reported that it was death on the small Vancouver Island black-tails and black bear with my recommended load of 68gr. 4064 and the 270gr. Win PP. No- that isn't a high velocity load, but makes tiny cloverleafs for groups & kills like the hammer of Thor.

Nailed the hell out of a skunk the other day at the ranch with the Tolley.

This gun's a 3-1/2" brass 500/450 bottleneck BPE gun, the load I put through it got a 350gr SNRN out at about 1850fps.

The skunk was evidently pissing off the ranch dog (jack russel) as we were getting out of the rig. The little fooker saw us and came our way, seemingly wanting to do the same. I dropped the gunslip off the rifle and drew two rounds out of the day's supply of test ammo, chambered them and came around the side of the animal. My intent was to kill the thing quick enough to keep it from being able to spray us or anything else on it's way out.

Put the bead on it's neck and pressed the front trigger, ripped the top of it's neck off pulling it's spine out of it's brain.
Worked great.

Those 'Musky Zebra Cats' can be quite a challenge out in these parts, gotta keep one's cool in such situations to avoid disaster...

We were spotlight shooting one night and as we went through a gate a Quail
took off but only flew 20 ft and landed in front of the Ute, right in the headlight.

When the guy who was shooting got back up, I told him to shoot the quail.
He mumbled something about "Blowing it apart" so I said you need to
"head shoot it".

He fired but forgot that at 20 ft you need to aim slightly high to allow for
where the scope above the bore.

Well the bullet hit the back of the bird and pooof, feathers everywhere.

No quail on toast over the camp fire that night !!!

guys, this sounds like a riot! I shoot small game all the time with my .577's, but always with #6 shot. I guess I should try squirrel with some 540gr minies sometime! I have taken bush chicken with my .30WCF(30-30) but suddenly that seems like a very small calibre to take them with after reading this thread!!
