I know this feeling.
I love the old and often obscure cartridges.

Although not terribly obscure, I've been chasing joy via cast bullets in the 30-40 Krag these past few weeks.

Always a lesson to learn.

It certainly is
.308Norma Magnum & 9.3x64mm Brenneke are my standouts.
It all honesty most 'big bores' would be considered 'obscure' so we could certainly add a lot more to this list!

A nice promotional article for Roberson. I have seen several.

I have also talked with Roberson recently about making brass.

Still I haven't seen anyone yet reporting actual use. Load development and reloading experience with Roberson brass.

Turned brass has some issues due to its different molecular structure. Turned brass is hard and brittle. Annealing doesn't help. Turned brass has a propensity for longitudinal body splits.

Turned brass has normally only had a cylindrical interior. Turned brass in a bottle neck cartridge was straight interior. A .308 Norma mag with a straight interior is not a .308 Norma Mag.

I have 5 GS Custom Martini Cases here. They have a straight cylinder interior.

The 577/450 Martini brass I had from North Devon had a bottle neck. But the brass from them broke the 7/8-14 sizing dies, and when sized with Lee dies tore the rims off.

When I talked to Roberson they said these issues have been addressed.

Roberson has a 50 case minimum. I understand the reasoning for that. but at $430 with tax and shipping I don't see a line forming for this brass.

I may dig out my .411 Barnes and send them a chamber cast and some fired brass. I make that brass from .375 H&H brass.

Maybe an example of why I like my .405 WCF and .45-90 over many more modern and popular cartridges.
Both can be lever action and double rifle and handloaded to take anything walking the globe.

Some might consider me eccentric.

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for sharing NitroX.
I read this on Facebook and I agree, some of these older obscure cartriges, are great.
It kinda makes you wonder, why they have dropped off in popularity.
Ammunition availability I assume, in the past, caused this but no excuses these days, thanks to Bertram and Woodleigh.

I know of an original WR made, .318 Accelerated Express, that has been rebarred (Tobler), and refurbished by Ross Waghorn, that is For Sale, if anybody really needs a good one.

Obscure? Hell, that's one of the reasons I like this forum.
One gets to see and read about these "obscure" calibers being put to good use.

Create a thread in the Mauser rifles forums. Photos and description.

If you have already, post a link here.

I would be interested. No doubt can't afford it currently.

The ones I shoot that come closest to "obscure" in the Rocky Mountains are:
6.5X54 M/S
9.3X57 Mauser
9.3X74R
Some men and women say "never heard of that' when I tell them the caliber of these rifles.

The ones I shoot that I can't call Obscure, but are not at all "mainstream" anymore are:
222 Remington
300 Savage
303 Brit
8X57 Mauser
35 Remington
358 Winchester
404 Jeffery.
These are shells that everyone has heard of but they don't see used much these days and it's a bit odd to see someone using one.

I call a cartridge "mainstream" or "run of the mill" when if you tell someone what you have they don't see anything even slightly odd about the choice

My "run of the mill shells" are:
223
25-06
270 Winchester
6.8SPC
30-30
308
30-06
7.62X39
9.3X62
375H&H

.38-55 WCF
.38-72 WCF
.375 2 1/2" Flanged NE.40-65 WCF
.40-82 WCF
.40-63 Ballard
.405 WCF
.40-90 Sharps Bottleneck
.45-70 Govt
.45-75 WCF
.45 2 7/8" Sharps
.450/.400 3" Jeffery
.404 Jeffery

.500/.450 #1 Express
.500/.450 3 1/4" Nitro
.470 Nitro Express
.50 2 1/2 Sharps
.500 AHR
.500 3" BP Express
.577/.450 Martini Henry
.577/.500 #2 Express
.577 2 3/4", 3", & 3 1/4" Express

Metric?
.256 Mannlicher (6.5x53R)
.256 Rimless (6.5x54)
9.3x62
9.3x74
11.2x72

Oh yea: I do have a couple of "mainstream": .30-06, .338 Min Mag, & .375 H&H

Another rather rare cartridge- the .Winchester 45-90 (.458 2.4 ) with 96 % cartridge capacity of Winchester .458 Win Mag. Also shoots .45-70.

Using solid bullets custom loaded to 2150 fps MV, took this ele, several Cape Buff, and with Nosler PP at 2200 fps, this leopard:

Confession - part of the pleasure of shooting these not common cartridges is showing what they can still do in the field.

I think its very difficult in this forum to mention anything obscure caliber. Its just standard in here.

I have had many oddball calibers over the years. List is too long.

My current semi obscure calibers is:

.333Jeffery
.500 BPE
.360ex 2¼"
10 bore

My standard are:

8x57
.300 H&H
.270Wea
.450 Nitro

One of the biggest pleasures are that really finely crafted rifles were made in really obscure calibers and passed over because of concerns over finding/making ammo

Put me in the column that prefers obscure cartridges! Just a few:

9.3 X 57R, old BP case on the 9.3 X 72R
8.7 X 55R
9 X 71 Peterlongo
10.5 X 47R
9 X 57 Mauser
40-82 WCF
40-70SS
45-2.6
45-90
8 X 56 M/S
11.15 X 60R
8 X 65R Brenneke
8 X 60R Magnum

And some not quite so obcsure:

9.3 X 57 Mauser
8.15 X 46R
7 X 64 Brenneke
8 X 57

And others.

I have some RCC brass and while it looks nice, I cannot recommend it. The brass I have came with my Meffert O/U double rifle in 8 X 60 Magnum. The brass had not been fired and a few cases were loaded. I don't trust many folks reloads and especially none that came through the mail so I pulled the bullets to check what the powder might be. It was supposed to be IMR-4895 and looked like it but, I used it for fertilizer anyway. The cases looked as if the volume was quite a bit less than what it should be. I compared the water weight volume to an 8 X 57 case and it was quite a bit LESS!!!! One couldn't get 8 X 57 starting powder charges in the case. I don't know what that was going to do with pressures but it seemed to me all they could do is increase. So, I ordered some 7 X 65R, RWS cases from Huntingtons and formed 8 X 60R cases from them and started load development. The RCC cases are on the shelf.

To Sharps 45-90,
You do have a long list of obscure cartridges and I had to read them all to find 45-90.
That turned out to be the only cartridge we have in common as I shoot 45-90 in my Miroku 1886 and in my Beretta DR, which turned out well.

I do not know where you shoot or hunt your .45-90 but my 1886 45-90 has taken some African DG including ele, buff, leopard and also plains game. It is VERY effective with 450 grain NF bullets at 2150 fps.

The only African game the my double has taken was a Blackbuck, in late spring before it got really hot here in Texas. I plan to take some larger game this coming fall and winter.

I share you distrust of other folks load data, especially since most of them do not use the powder that I do.

cr, I saw you had used your 45-90 in Africa and thought that was a fine recommendation for the cartridge!!

My 45-90 is in a Shiloh Sharps, Montana Roughrider. For 12 years I used the rifle to the exclusion of all others and never had to shoot anything twice and, only twice did the animal not fall where it stood. One was a forky, mulie that simply turned around and fell. The other was about a 220 lb. boar I hit well at a full run at about 40 yards. He slid about 20 ft. on his snout but never moved when he came to a stop. Everything else crumpled where it stood, from elk down.

My load has always been a 480 gr., NEI bullet cast of 25-1 over 80 grs. of GOEX Cartridge....which I am about out of!!! Hopefully the few cans of Old Eynsford I have will perform as well. Over my chronograph it runs 1200 fps, a little more or less, barely. SD and extreme spread are in single digits.

I recently acquired a German, muzzleloading, percussion double rifle in 56 caliber. To my delight it regulated quite easily, only had to try two loads and it came on at 65 yards, shooting a 2-3 inch, composite group with open sights and 69 year old eyes!!. If I don't have a much needed back surgery before fall, I hope to blood it.

Last year I took my deer with the 9 X 71 Peterlongo and a cast bullet load, about like a 35 Remington. The deer flailed about 15 yards.

Oh, I had an E.M. Reilly in 500 BPE for about 20 years. Fun rifle and cartridge though I never killed anything with it. Sold it and bought the Vierordt double in 8 X 65R.
