Krag pictures wanted.
      #347182 - 26/11/20 07:59 AM

To continue the Krag theme, I'd like to find some pictures of Krags fitted with cocking-piece aperture sights, if anyone has some to share. I've searched numerous places on the net, unsuccessfully. I've got plenty of pictures of the bare components, but none installed on the rifles, other than one long shot with no real detail. Anything would be a help.

Lots of googled up pictures, none with cocking piece aperture
although asking for that.
Seems to me there weren't any or some would show up, would they not?

How about this one. I have two Krags; however this is not mine:

You'd think so, but I know I've seen a few in the past and yet nothing comes up in a search.

Not my photos.

They are from this discussion at the Double Gun BBS

https://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=117029

Note the modified sear engagement.
That's the "only way" to do this, in my opinion.
Going with the standard flat sear engagement allows the cocking piece to move side to side at engagement, leaving you with excessive windage error.

Many thanks for these pictures, Tinker.

I agree, that sear modification will definitely keep the sight on center. The side play in the cocking piece seems to vary according to the rifle, I've found. I made up a test fixture on one of mine and found it centered on the same spot each time. Good enough for a bolt-mounted ring sight, anyway. It certainly allows for an excellent sight radius.

Thanks also, TexasJohn. Yours is the only good example of the Lyman set-up I've seen so far.

Indeed! And I'm most grateful to the contributors.

I'd still like to find some for the Lyman, and possibly some of the Bergen sight, but that's probably wishful thinking. I can't even find the Bergen sight, period, online.

Way ahead, John. I went through the list and lots of great rifles, but without much success. I'm not looking for pictures of Krags, I'm looking for pictures of cocking-piece sights on Krags. A lot fewer and farther between.

We've been drooling over that WR Krag at the workshop for the past couple of weeks at least.

Something to consider about the Krag is that the lock time is already long as it is. Adding an adjustable aperture sight to it makes it loooonger.

This might be why you see so few examples.
The Lyman, Redfield, and Pacific brands of receiver mounted aperture sights offered a great range of fantastic sights that were pretty popular.

I've said it before, and I'm still saying it: I can't understand why some enterprising capitalist isn't cranking out copies of the Lyman in China and flogging them at $99 per. Just change them a bit so some Flash Harry doesn't try to palm them off as originals. They're a fabulous option for a hunting rifle if you don't want to drill and tap for a scope, especially on a split-bridge.

Probably because tghe Chinese copies would be crap.

Everything coming out of China should have 200% tariffs in the West. Force the slave state to actually free its slaves.

Chinese products "Made by slaves".

They probably would be crap, you're right.

Believe me, I'm with you here. The world was a better place when the Bamboo Curtain was in place and our goods were manufactured by a wide variety of sources. Now almost all our manufacturing eggs are in one basket, and a hostile basket at that. I'm certainly not advocating moving more production to a country that uses child and prison labour, and operates under few, if any, labour and environmental restrictions. I merely suggested that if anyone were to set up production, it would almost certainly be there, sadly. I'd be much happier if it were somewhere else.

I have got an axe to grind with China. They put on 200% tariff on Australian wines yesterday. Many other products also be restricted. Note they signed an Asian free trade policy last week .... but they don't like Australian foreign policies so, who cares about a recently signed agreement.

Ffff China.

This isn't a politics forum, but seriously what serious firearms products are made in China? Nothing of any sort of quality. Slave labour has never been known to make quality.

They don't like our policies either. After we arrested a Chinese tycoon who's connected with their government, they jailed two of our citizens on trumped-up charges and are threatening to execute them if we don't release her. They're getting more arrogant by the day, and it will only get worse.

And speaking of bolt-mounted sights on Krags.....
