two Schuler rifles
      #347172 - 26/11/20 05:54 AM

ash send me a link to a south african gunmaker "sabirifles" https://www.sabirifles.co.za/index.php

who had two 11,2 mm Schuler rifles on the website listed as "Refurbushed "

first is a 11,2x60 Stutzen
https://www.sabirifles.co.za/index.php/r...3zo1WQSIbmQRsgy

the other rifle is a 11,2x72 Schuler and you can clearly read "Waffenfabrik Peterlongo"
well, we had this connection here before, the Peterlongo owner Marholdt was a close friend of Schüler and market this rifles before the great war

Most desirable rifles, also apparently very carefully restored; thank you for sharing, Lancaster. South Africa seems to be an endless source of supply for classic German and Austrian hunting rifles!

Very classy rifles!
Thanks for that Lancaster.
I think that Bertram has brass for both & Woodleigh the projectiles.
Would be interesting to know how good these cartridges are on game.

Last year I aquired a Stogos marketed Schuler/Suhl '98 Mauser in 11.2x72, right now it is with Steve Bertram getting a new stock. Interestingly it is a standard length ‘98, (not magnum & not opened up), this required the bullets to be quite deeply seated at 3.265" overall.
Apparently the cartridge was loaded to two different overall lengths to accommodate rifles offered with standard or magnum magazine and action lengths.
Yes, brass by Bertram and bullets from Woodleigh........both difficult to source here in the USA likely due to almost no market for quantity sales of the brass and bullets. Lucked into a set of RCBS dies.

I have not got to shoot this one other than test fire to make sure it fed and fired before going to Steve.
In that this cartridge is roughly 1/2 way between the .404 Jeffery and the .458 Win Mag I would expect equivalent performance if using quality modern bullets like the Woodleigh.
Some early sources indicate somewhat lower than the claimed 2400’/sec muzzle velocity which would not surprise me given how far into the powder space a 400 grain bullet has to be seated to work thru the standard length action.

Think of it as a little hotter performing .404 Jeffery or as a .416 Rigby speed with a .440 400 grain bullet.
- Mike

Two original Schuler headstamp 11.2x72 alongside an original .440' 401 grain solid. Note how far into the powder space the bullet is seated.

I also had a Stogos 11.2X72 once.
It was a very interesting rifle - brass magazine, bent bottom metal too iirc, sort of like my 500 Schuler but with a shotgun style trigger guard.
I think I posted it here on NE when I had it.

I also own a rifle caliber 11,2x72 built in 1923 from Schüler and with it I once shot a buffalo.

Because you have to set the bullet deep in order to get the cartridge in a normal Mauser 98 magazine , some potential of the cartridge is lost. There can be no comparison with the performance of an cartridge 416 Rigby.

In addition , the 401gr SP Woodleigh bullets are not the best for hunting Big Game.

IMHO this cartridge is obsolete and no longer corresponds to today's standard for hunting Big Game or DG.

What's wrong with the 401gr SP Woodleigh bullets? I wouldn't use them for head shots but they should work OK for body shots.

Cutting Edge bullets makes .440 cal. 410 gr Safari Raptors and .440 Cal. 450 gr Safari Solids. I haven't shot these so I don't know if there is a stability problem. They are long bullets.

The cutting edge bullets do take up a lot of powder space.

Back on topic. I like the 11,2x60 Stutzen. I always liked full stocked short barreled rifles although I never bought one. It would make a good li'l bear gun.
