Shooting the .577 tomorrow
      #34711 - 16/07/05 07:45 AM

I plan on going to the range tomorrow morning to fire off some rounds. I couldn't get the recommended powder for the reduced loads(backordered)around here. So I loaded the full charge with Reloader 15 and Wooleigh solids, we'll have a time tomorrow. I'm also firing some flintlocks and a new Ruger safari MKII in 30 06. I'll fill you all in later

Dude, I wish I was there to try some of those loads out with you. Have fun and remember, it'll definitely hurt you only if you let it.

Got acquainted with the big gun today. After the initial whack to the nose, I held on a bit tighter and got things under control. I did not try and regulate the rifle today. Just wanted to get used to the thing. It reminds me of the first time I shot a .375. I thought it kicked like a mule. After a few practice sessions it was like shooting a 30 06. I managed to keep most of the hits inside a 6 inch square at 25 and 50 yards with a couple of flyers thrown in due to flinching. I will shoot it again tomorrow and then next week start to regulate her. Its some gun. I did have an iteresting dent about an inch long on two cases. The dent shape went along the cases up by where the bullet was seated. I figured I had left too much lubricant on the cases. It only happened to two the last two rounds I fired. Any comments?

I'd call Butch on the cases and ask him about it. As to shooting, I almost spit out my beer when I read the part of your hitting your nose with the thumb. I know a lot of guys who do that on a regular basis. When you have a full and firm grip with the thumb curled down on the stock, the pain goes away. Did you use some factory or custom loads for your initiation to the really bigbore world?

maineguide:
If you left enough lubricant on the cases to dent them on firing, you would get wet fingers loading them! More likely a bit of gas has made it back past the case-mouth seal before the bullet exited the muzzle. This doesn't happen very often with normal brass elasticity and normal pressure loads, and is more commonly seen on the shoulder of bottle-neck cases. I've only ever seen it happen on brand new brass.

Is it a problem? Not unless it happens again IMHO...

Hopefully the cases will pop out on resizing, or at next firing.

Marrakai,

I thought I had wiped them down pretty well. But my brass was brand new. I had just bought some from Huntington's. Thanks for the info. I'll just wait and see what happens next time.

FYI: Found and photographed a .400-3inch case which sustained dents on first firing. It was about half-way through a series of 10 shots with new brass. This is only the second time it has happened to me personally, and I've been shown it by other reloaders a couple more times over the years. As you can see, it's quite different from the small dents on the actual shoulder caused by excess lube in the sizing die!

Anyone else had this happen?

Marrakai,

That's the same dent and location as my cases. My dent was about twice as long though, and it did not come out in resizeing as the it only does the mouth and outside bulges. 500, the brass was Horneber as everyone recommended. I will shoot her tomorrow and see what happens. 120gr of reloader 15 with Woodleigh 750gr solids. Yeeha!!!

Suggest running loads over chrono.-looks like pressure too low but load listed looks correct-could a couple of cases be undercharged?

In reply to:

could a couple of cases be undercharged

Wombat: not likely in my case, since I trickle each and every charge to correct weight when loading the NEs. Wouldn't mind knowing how it happens though, implies lower pressure inside the case than just outside the case-mouth, for a split-second. Not logical.

Well the gun is shooting fairly tight groups and appears to be close to regulated with this recipe. Fired reloaded cases and no dents occurred. I will chrono soon just to see what it is but I don't think its under charged and I know my cases all had the same amount of powder in them.

Marrakia,
I had a 500 nitro built by Ron Webb .The load he recommended (80gns 3031) was a woefully low pressure load
about 1700fps with the 570 woodleigh. The cases all had a similiar problem to the subject at hand.It was my impression that ,in my case, the problem was inadequate pressure not producing a good seal at the neck allowing gas "back to the body of the case"and causing a dent.
There was some powder burn effect in association with the
dent.

Hmmm, very interesting. You will note the absence of any powder-burn marks on the .400 case in my earlier post, it wasn't cleaned.

What action did Ron build that .500 NE on? Surely not the Ruger Red Label...
If so, or even Ruger No.1, I assume he recommended the reduced load to keep the recoil manageable in such a light-weight gun. In any case, no-one likes 3031 for the NEs anymore, too many horror-stories.

Did that load produce dents on cases OTHER than at first firing?

Have fun with the big bore!

A friend here in town is currently forming brass for her 577 snider. She's getting me off my duff to get the sixteen bore double rifle running.

I had similar dents on two of the first eight rounds through my 500/450BPE3-1/2" Tolley. I've been rather busy since then, don't remember exactly what the charge was, but it was essentially a very low pressure 4831 load through virgin brass. The dents popped out at the next firing and never happened again. No damage to the brass, no signs of the dent after the second load.

Geez guys, I don't think 120grs of reloader 15 would be considered a low presure load. Do you?

Compared to 145 grains of 4590 it might be.

500,

I'm using Feds 215. As I said I shot her again and no problems whatsoever with the dented cases. The recoil is manageable.

Colorado:

I don't want to speak for the man, but in other posts (email) he said the fit wasn't right for him. He wanted a better LOP, drop at the comb, etc.

But like I said, this is from memory of what I recall him posting, but I'll let him correct anything/everything on my post.

He also said that upon selling, he'd probably order another .577 from Butch, made specifically for him.
