Valuations and insurance of doubles in Australia

A question for our Aussie double rifle owners.

Do you insure your double rifles, outside of the house ie for when travelling in Australia or overseas?

Are there any good companies or policies that are recommended?

Lastly I am looking for someone who can do an appropriate appraisal of value for insurance purposes. Any recommendations?

I don't insure travelling in Oz but do o/s - had a gun c ase "lost" on the way to Zim 7 years ago and was really happy I had it insured as it took three days to find it (in J'berg) and get it too me. Had lots of hassles getting on the Harare-Vic falls flight with ammo but no guns. Igot a valuation from my friendly local antique firearms dealer and "licenced valuer" (whatever that means). Insured with NRMA - now IAG.

I would really be interested in hearing which companies people use, especially if they have had to make a claim - was value disputed etc.

Also, is there a reasonably cheap way to insure guns being carried relatively regularly to go hunting - the trouble I have is I carry guns in the car weekly but often different ones so havig them all valued and covered for loss out of the house is prohibitive.

Most "Firearms Indentifiers" in this country wouldn't have a clue as to value.

Try SSAA insurance for insuring OS.

I don't insure my guns when travelling within Australia and have never had a problem
and as you know, I probably fly with guns (doubles) more than most people.

(I must admit I pay a bit more and fly Qantas as they seem to have a better system for
guns and ammo + they never loose sight of the gun once it goes into secured baggage
+ it is a small price to pay for peace of mind.)

SSAA Insurance Brokers' standard Contents insurance covers contents items temporarily removed, for up to 35 days in any premium year, anywhere in the world. The coverage in Oz/NZ may not have the 35 day limitation, but the policy wording's a bit ambiguous here.

There are some exclusions, to do with leisure vehicles and surfboards etc when not in a building, but firearms are not affected, as long as they're not being used as 'tools of trade'.

For firearms not specifically listed in a policy schedule, with valuations etc, the claim limits are $1500 per item, $10000 total.

The difficult bit with doubles would be getting a realistic valuation. Only the few shops that have a bit of a DR speciality [e.g. McDonald's and Century Arms, and maybe Whitehorse Arms, of the Melbourne lot] would know their values well enough.

If you have extended your cover for a double rifle, what sort of aded premium did you have to pay, for what value of firearms?

I've got more bad news for you Gadge, SSAA's insurance is through Allianz, and they will NOT cover any firearm more than 25 years old, PERIOD!

(Pretty sure it was 25 years, something like that...)

Not a single firearm in my collection was eligible for cover!
SSAA need their heads read for supporting a deal like that!
Kiss 'em off...

Also, they require you to transfer over your entire contents policy to them, and firearms can only be up to 25% of the total. With some haggling, they agreed to consider up to 50%, but no more. If you're like me, the average sporting arm in my safe is worth about 5 times the average sofa in my lounge-room!

SSAA specialist insurance tailored for gun-owners? Not even close... !

FWIW, TIO insurance in the NT will cover any item as part of a contents policy up to $100,000 total, the onus is on you to prove the value when making a claim. If you want more than a hundred grand total, that's OK too but they will send out a valuer to make sure you're not setting them up for a scam. Dunno how they'd handle vintage rifles, but I bet they'd be sensible about it. No restriction on what proportion of the cover is firearms, as long as you don't deliberately under-value the rest of your stuff.

...and you get free Croc-Attack cover thrown in!

No thanks. I looked for 2 years for one and then all of a sudden I found 2, only 6 serial numbers apart. One in Melbourne and one in Sydney.

Unless, of course, it is a takedown?

IF it was a take down, I wouldn't be selling it !!!

One of the things I collect are take down bolt actions
(although why I sold my H&H 375 Takedown I don't know !!!)

Rigby seemed to make very few take down 275's.
How many have you seen - if any ?

I have only seen one. An aquaintance owned it and it was a beauty. Bolt peep, lever floorplate, light engraving and in great condition. I offered him $3500 for it. He sold it for $3200. I asked why he didn't sell it to me and he said he didn't think I was serious about buying it.

Thanks for the update of SSAA Insurance's 'offerings'.

What I wrote above, was correct at that time. But at [or maybe a bit before] the start of this year, their setup changed from writing policies as a broker, with QBE & MMI as joint underwriters, to acting as agent only, and for Allianz.

The change in setup was due to changes in legislation, but as you say, SSAA have a few roos loose in the top paddock, for going with Allianz.

You've caused me to do a careful comparison of the policy wording between QBE/MMI and Allianz, and although SSAA Insurance claimed that Allianz had adopted their 'Steadfast' policy wording, there are some gotchas in it, alright.

And the firearms stuff was spelled out in the policy schedule, formerly. No longer the case.

I presume you were looking at insuring firearms as 'specified personal effects'?

Looks like you're fortunate to have TIO, up at the Top End. We Mexicans will just have to see what we can find.

I never got mine formally valued.

Anyone have a good valuer an insurance company would accept?
