Lefaucheux Model 1859 Carbine
      #346355 - 31/10/20 03:17 AM

The Lefaucheux model 1859 carbine was a small carbine Eugène Lefaucheux made with hopes to gain military acceptance. It is a very simple design with few moving parts. It only weighs 4.5 pounds and has an overall length of 3 feet 4 inches.

There are multiple variations of this gun; some with a full metal frame, some with an automatic cartridge extractor, a percussion cap version, a double barrel version, pistols, and various bores.

This example is chambered for 12mm pinfire cartridges, has a manual extractor and a solid wood stock.

I have videos of how it works, the United States patent for it, more images and more on the blog post for it: Lefaucheux Model 1859 Carbine

VERY cool!
Leutenant James Forsyth wrote in his 1860 book, "The Sporting Rifle and It's Projectiles" published in 1862 that until breechloading principles were developed to handle powerful ctgs. hardened lead round balls would be the favourite for the hunting of dangerous game.
He noted in his book, that rifles on the "new" Lefaucheux principal would likely take over when they could be made to handle powerful ctgs with hardened bullets.
I did not know of this version.
Thankyou.

hardened bullets.

I am pretty sure one of the first examples of these were in pinfires too. Gevelot patented a method for hardened bullets and used it on some of his earliest pinfire pistol cartridges.

They were actually stamped with a "G" on the tip of the bullet to indicate this.

Interesting find.
Hardened lead round balls were being used before any ctg. gun was invented.
Even Jacob's, with his 4/winged "hardened bolts" & "explosive bolts" in his 4-grooved SxS used hardened bullet. Tin and Mercury were the usual metals used for hardening up until 1860 or so.
It is possible Gevelot found another method, as in antimony?

Neat little carbine.

Have you fired it?

I have not fired it. I would potentially fire it though. Some day I would like to make videos of firing more of them.
