As 52 years of age my eyes may not be as good as they were, but I have been shooting ironsights since childhood and when shooting ironsight I procure a "sightpicture" in my mind which helps me when to pull the trigger.

My new(old) Cogswell & harrison .500ex has 28" barrels. Its just lovely to raise the rifle to the shoulder and just point at fictual target.

Sad to say, but I am older than that.. and still use open sights frequently on .22 rimfires and some older centerfires.. also what I teach my kids to use

Use irons every time I shoot my muzzle loaders, or the Sharps, which is more often than the modern stuff, now a days.
Turned 70 last spring and have worn glasses since I needed them to see gophers at 35 yards, back when I was 42.
The open sights are fuzzy, but I still seem to win at both more than not, with only a moderately fuzzy front sight.
The back sight is well, nasty fuzzy.
Except - wide V and bead front sight works the best. The ball hits the centre of the fuzzy bead.

This is sort of what I was thinking - unwieldy in the bush except maybe when used to push the bush out of the way. Probably a good many were used in that way, wading through 8 foot high grass.

Also, if one is going to have a gun with a 28 in barrel, I think it would probably feel better in the hand with the long Afrika type stock.

Here’s a great looking Mannlicher built to exactly the specs of an “African” model - even retailed by Heyer in Nairobi!!

In 375 Express too! I really like this rifle!

I like the stocks in length between half and full stock. well, it looks like there was not enough money to get a real Stutzen stock but there is a special sexiness in my eye's.
I think it needs the schnabel end, the french did this with the rival rifles for the daudeteau action. the mauser action rival rifles seems to miss the real schnabel.

also working with the Heckler&Koch so it don't depend on the action.

A Very nice and early Oberndorf African model 98 in 8mm just popped up on gunbroker. Bidding ends 11/15/20, and the price is now at $8500. It is in virtually new condition.
