German 'cape gun' approx 11mm x 37 mm ???
      #34632 - 13/07/05 12:02 AM

Looking at a German Cape gun with a barrel in 12-bore x 2 1/2 inch and a rimmed barrel which is approximately 11 mm calibre and a length of approx 38 mm.

Gentlemen

What cartridge do you think this may be?

Thanks.

Nitro,

Sounds like a .43 Mauser.

I'm at work now and away from my copy of Cartridges of the World so might be a little off in my assessment. I'd bet a 10 spot on it, though.

Regards,
Curl

10.4x38Rmm Swiss Vetterli ????

Probably way off base but figured I throw it out there.

The 43 Mauser case is about 60mm long. The Veetterli is about 41mm. Could it be that your 11mm bore is 38mm to the base of the neck? Is this straight walled or does the chamber have a shoulder?

I have seen a couple of late 19th century combination guns with American chamberings like 44/40 Long, etc. The 12 ga makes me think this was possibly made for the American market.

The shotgun and combination set is made by Louis Hellfritsch of Berlin.

I do not have a brass case only a description by the owner of the chamber which was described as 11mm by 1 1/2 inch long, and the bores are in poor condition. Shotgun chambers are 2 1/2". Set of shotgun barrels and second set of cape barrels.

Any ideas?

Also could the shotgun/rifle cape barrel set be used as a project to build something else?

The 10.4x38Rmm Swiss Vetterli sounds like a possibilty for the original chamber.

What sort of ballistics did it achieve? Was it originally black powder?

There were literally dozens of cartridges with those general dimensions in 1880-90 Gremany; the best single reference is Dixon's "European Sporting Cartridges" which at least gives some dimensional data if no ballistics. The only real answer to this question is to make a chamber cast and find whatever components give the best fit. I'd be happy to help with the ID once you have measurements. Ballistically you're talking about black powder performance in the .450 #1 Carbine or .45-60 range.

the most used brass in this days was the 11,2x60R Mauser case, we know over 100 hundred different wildcats and a 11x38R is under this. Till you bring measurments of the cartridge I will believe that this is from the Mauser cartridge family. very rare chambering and cartridges, most times only made as a wildcat from local gunmakers. the big firms like RWS making every brass you need before ww 1 and the ammo was loaded from the gunmaker for the rifle.
