Chicks and Chucks
      #3454 - 27/06/03 11:40 PM

Nope, not what you think!

I have an infestation of woodchucks under my porch. For the Aussies, these are Marmots, large rodents very common to the eastern part of the US. They are quite large at maturity. There are at least three, well, WERE at least three.

So I began the evening to remove the problem. The animals had chewed the wood face off my front steps to gain access to the area under the porch. They were also devouring my flower gardens. That's a no-no on both accounts.

So it's varmint control time.

This was a weird "hunt" shoot, what ever you want to call it.

Below are two hand raised 4 week old chicks.

I am mom to them. Don't they look innocent? If you sit on the ground they will take to perching on your shoulder. They roam my front and side yard as they are not yet big enough to join the grown birds.

So here I am all serious about removing these adolescent aged rats and have set up a sniper position behind one of my stone walls. I nail one of the chucks about 15 minutes after taking my position. I then go move it away from the step as a decoy and return to my position. Soon I can hear my chicks coming along. Guess what they decide to do?

Since I am sitting on the ground they fly up on my shoulder and start squabbling with each other. It is pointless to try and make them go away. Well they finally settle and then my second target comes up. The birds are right above my stock so they have a premium view. It is a bit of a wait to get a good clear shot of the pesky varmint. Then it is time. I fired away and was quite surprised that the shot did not cause the birds to bail out. Nope, the little rascalls stayed where they were.

New hunting partners????

Ann

Photos fixed.

My guess is the photo forum where you placed your photos has a "pipe" open to some sites but generally closes bandwidth to the net in general. Therefore it works to some sites but not all.

***

Ann you need to train your chooks to use a video camera and they will have a "bird's eye view" of your upcoming buffalo hunt

Perhaps they also gave you the perfect camoflage as a chicken roost. I guess they also give you nice shoulder patches too

Thanks for the fix, John! The place I host my photos has worked fine here before. That's where they all come from. Can't figure why they won't work here now? They work on the other forums I write on.

My horse has been witness to some of my hunting kills. He once felt he should tag along side me when I was rabbit hunting once in the pasture. I kept trying to move him off and in typical pet fashion, he refused. So he had quite a surprise when I fired my 22 at a bunny when he was goofing around. He ran off thinking I shot him and as soon as he figured out he spooked foolishly he became very embarrased. He is quite used to gun fire though not near his face.

He's also seen me kill deer with an arrow twice. I shoot my bow at targets right near his turnout area so he is not afraid of the sound or flight of of the bow and arrows. I used to have a blind set up on the west side of my horse pasture and the scent made for great cover as the wind comes in from the west.

Pets can be amazing.

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA I JUST GOT FROM YOUR POST ANNE

Yep train a couple of chickens to sit on your shoulder no matter what so that when stalking an animal and it see`s movement all you need is for one of the chooks to flap its wings and the animal will believe its "only a bird" without being duly alarmed---BANG GOTCHA
One down side being that they may have to wear nappies (diapers)-thanks Anne i`m off to the farm to get a couple haha. You guys in Africa could try half a dozen ox-peckers on tethers haha

I am soooo glad to help!

Sometimes animals seem to help the hunt more than hinder it. When the game sees the "farm" animal it immediatly becomes relaxed again.

I've been lucky that the young birds have not landed any droppings on me. Don't know if you can train them or not! Once full grown they won't fit on my shoulders.

I almost forgot.....

Took a feral tabby the same night off my porch. Damn thing was looking to start pissing on the house. I've been after this cat for a year and got him at fairly close range with an off hand shot. Sure surprised the cat.

Great story Ann. I could use your help here in PA. I had to give up on my vegetable garden this year due to a large population of those "Meadow Grizzlies". Up until this year I could keep them in check with my Remington 22 bolt action, fired from the back porch, but now some homes were built behind my property, and I can't risk a shot now.
