Large 4.4 m croc captured South of Katherine
      #344694 - 31/08/20 08:52 PM

News reports of a large 4.4 m saltie croc captured 120 kms South of Katherine got me thinking. Curl and I and before that JB and I were hunting South of Katherine, how close were we to where the croc was captured? I thought we were well away from likely or probable saltwater croc territory though one never knows.

Looking at a map, we were further North and in a different direction so not in the same area. But the question is, ithat likely cooc territory where it was captured? I don't think so. Though there is a large lagoon there.

NT rangers trap ‘monster’ crocodile near tourist spot

Wildlife rangers in the Top End have caught a 4.4-metre, 350-kilogram saltwater crocodile in an area frequented by tourists.

The massive male croc was trapped in the Flora River Nature Park, about 120 kilometres south of Katherine, last Friday and local rangers say it is the biggest to be caught in the Flora River in at least five years.

“The tourists walk down to the river in the area where he was,” Katherine senior wildlife ranger John Burke said.

Mr Burke emphasised the importance of being “crocwise” around waterways.

“With the weather warming up, the crocodiles are becoming active,” he said.

“They’re moving into breeding season as well, and the rivers are low and they’re out looking for mates, particularly the big males.”

Local rangers also caught a 3.3-metre male saltwater crocodile in the Katherine River, about 55 kilometres downstream of Katherine last week

‘You’ve got to respect him’
Mr Burke said the 4.4-metre crocodile was the biggest one trapped this year.

“Every couple of years we’ll get a big one up around 4.5 to 4.7 metres, but most of the time the average length for the crocs we catch in the Katherine River is 3.6 metres,” he said.

“You’ve certainly got to respect him for what he is, and he’s in good condition, too.

“I certainly wouldn’t want to run across him when I’m out fishing.”

The crocodile has been taken to a crocodile farm and will be used as breeding stock, according to Mr Burke.

“Hopefully, it will be a little croc resort there and he’ll have a new girlfriend,” he said.

Less rain and crocodiles
The Katherine region has experienced consecutive wet seasons with well-below average rainfall, and the lack of rain is starting to affect croc movements.

“Crocs haven’t moved around, and they’ve stayed in the water holes where they are,” Mr Burke said.

Katherine wildlife rangers removed 23 crocodiles from the Katherine River management zone three years ago.

Mr Burke said the number of removals had fallen to just five a year in the past few years.

It would have been quite a surprise to see that fellow in the little creek behind our camp, especially while bathing!

Could that big croc get along in this little creek, or does he need bigger water?

A big croc like that would live in bigger waters. Hohey do travel overland so one never knows. Very unlikely where were. Further down river towards the coast, no doubt.

I think a monster like that would stick out of the water a bit in the knee deep water we washed up in.

I think JB told me this year Clayton told him he would not swim in those waters! I think it was a joke. Clayton told me, very unlikely.

This map puts Flora River further North from a proper map?

it is well to the Werom where we were and a different river system I think. I think the Flora River park is part of the River. We were on the upper waters of the Roper River I think.

Giwining / Flora River Nature Park
The Flora River is stunning with crystal-clear emerald springs and tufa dams.

There are saltwater crocodiles in the river so do not swim and Be Crocwise at all times.

There is excellent fishing and you may be lucky to catch a grunter, bream or barramundi for dinner.

Downstream the river merges with the Katherine River and the Daly River.

These are some of the most sought after barramundi fishing destinations in the Northern Territory (NT).

The short walks to Kathleen and Djarrung Falls are rewarding and will let you see the park's varied wildlife.

This includes the pig-nosed turtle, which was once believed to only live in Papua New Guinea.

Giwining has a rich cultural history and the traditional owners, the Wardaman people, continue to practice ceremonies at sacred sites throughout the park.

A lot deeper and bigger than where we were.

Looks nice. But if you are advised not to swim there, canoeing there is not smart either.

Plus remember further along the same creek where it formed some bigger pools, the station owners had a swimming and boating spot if you remember. We should have camped there.
