Very interesting M1900 - Gunbroker

This is a rough but rather curious M1900: Gunbroker

The seller writes; "Up for auction is a Steyr Mannlicher Schoenauer Model 1900 chambered in 6.5X54 caliber. The 22" barrel has a bore is bright, shiny and clean with strong rifling. The stock looks original, with minor handling marks as seen in the pics. The serial number is 95XX, I have obscured the serial number digits to protect the buyer.I can not find any history on this gun so any information that I could add to this listing would be appreciated."

It has the early, outboard mounted, magazine release and is in a stock that clearly is not original as it does not even fit:

Early magazine release

Note the Mauser looking 'thumb notch' in stock with no corresponding dip on MS receiver

Vast gaps between wood and metal

Filler in front of trigger guard

Definitely a Mauser stock 'butchered' to fit, definitely seen better days this old girl, if the barrel's rifling is OK then it's going to take a while lots of $$$$) for this sow's ear to turn into a silk purse again!

Just when I think i am getting a grip on things, something else turns up, ie, early magazine release. Is that specific to the m1900 and then changed with the introduction of the m1903?

You got it, revised on the 1903. Another 1900 was recently auctioned elsewhere, I don’t recall where though off the top of my head.

The magazine release was changed during production of the M1900.

M1900, early magazine release

M1900, late magazine release

Also this, per a previous post from Kuduae:

"One feature distinguishing the M1900 from the M1903: The M1900s had a flat spring inlaid into the left side of the cocking piece, retaining the firing pin nut. The M1903 omitted this unnecessary spring, replacing it with a small tab on the bottom of the nut.."

Here's a thread from another 'site with a bit of MS information to study: https://www.africahunting.com/threads/ma...velocity.47277/
