obviously one nearly worked and the other not.
Can anybody help.

Was a hunt in the town district of Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province of South-Africa.

We were on our way back to camp to get ready for the rugby game between South-Africa and France when we got sight of this animal. It dissapeared around the side of the "koppie"(little hill)Iwas the first one to nominate the animal for myself and jumped of the vehicle with my 460wby mag.My loads was 400gr solids reaching velocity of about 2500ftps.I stalked alone around the "koppie" and noticed that the bull went a little bit up the "koppie".I moved into an spot where I could see the whole animal.Took rest on the side of a camel thorn tree. Now my scope on the 460 is only a pointer and there is no magnification(Lynx RDC-1 Red dot)The hartebeest was about 200m away and I was tempted to try the shot.He was facing me and I thought of a chest shot. With no wind and good conditions the odds was on my side.I then thought about the cost of the animal and my wallet and decided to get a bit closer.I stalked around the right and came out on the same level as the hartebeest on the "koppie".He was still facing in the direction of my first position so now he was quatering left front towards me but not to much.Still good for a broad side shot. There wasnt any good place to shoot from and it was still a bit far to take a shot out of the face.I crawled forward on al fours to a small schrub about 10 meters in front of me.Suddenly the hartebeest turned and faced me snorting.I waited a couple of minutes that felt like hours and he turned again broadside. Here is my chance !!!!!!! I pumped him with the solid on the left shoulder and the bullet excited on the rihgt, just low and behind the right shoulder. It was about 110m.He dropped just there and then with a few spasmodic kicks.Dragged him down the hill a bit and waited for the rest of the party to help with the loading. On this same trip I also shot 2 springbuck and a nice warthog. My 3 friends that went with shot 9 springbuck,1 impala and 3 blesbuck so in total we got 17 animals for the weekend.

Didn't you feel a bit undergunned with only a 460 Weatherby?

When hunting hartebeest in 2002 with 'BigFive' we tried all sorts of things to get onto them. Tracking them as usual after sighting. Trying to anticipate where they would cross tracks and ambushing them. Spooring vehicle tracks for their tracks etc.

We did have a couple quick opportunities but obviously need to work out which hartebeest is which as the males and females are similar.

One of the days we decided to attempt them in the middle of the heat of the day by tracking them to where they were lying down. We did this very successfully and while "Shorty" the tracker and "BigFive" were following the tracks intent, I saw we had walked right among them lying unseen in the grass in the shade. They jumped and thundered off only 17 yards away from us. Had I known which was which I could have blasted one.

We even extended the hunt by two or three days to keep at them.

'BigFive' is tormenting me by posting his success. But I can't wait to see the "Hellbeast" he has been successful on.

It looks like a lovely setting to be hunting. That Hartebeest has some massive bases: they look like they almost come together. How long are the horns?

I agree. Dantri sent to me larger jpeg files and I got a very close look at the Hartebeest. Very thick bases. A nice trophy for the wall.

I like the warthog too. What length did the tusks go?

Send me the springbok photo too. The email didn't have anything attached.

It sounds like you and your friends had a good hunt and filled the larders too.

Mike/NitroX

The warthog is a nice trophy but not near any RW qualifying. It took me 3 shots to kill the bugger.I think Iposted that story somewere else all ready. The tusks are about 7-9 inches but they were very worn off and the one is a lot shorter than the other as you can see on th picture. The smaller bottom tusks were also interesting cause one was missing and the other broken in half. This warthog took 3 bullets through the head before giving up.
He was very old and there is a lot of battle scars on the head so I decided to give the old fellow a place on my wall.

The hartebeest was also an old bull and the horns looks very good. They qualify on 23inches for RW but these two horns messured 21 3/4 and the other one was 21.Not in the books but something worthy to hang up against the wall.

Next weekend I'll be off hunting Blackwildebeest and the weekend after I am gonna get my RW trophy Common Reedbuck.

BigFive

Springbok are such lovely animals. One (or more ) will certainly be on the agenda in the future.
