Which BIG BORE
      #343688 - 27/07/20 12:35 AM

So Im thinking I need a Big Bore muzzle loader. I come back to this every so often. Ive got a few smoothbore muskets and even a repro Baker rifle; but I want something more. Looking at my options theres the Pedersoli Gibbs African Hunter in 72cal for about $2000. October Country makes a few from 62cal to 75cal (prices vary with final design). Finally The Gun Works make 8 and 4 Bore rifles for $4750.

I thought I might be Ok with the Gibbs; but suddenly 72cal is looking small. Theres just "something" about a 4 Bore. Looking at the pics of the 4 Bore, I wonder if its not TOO big, sorta like a porn star; you think its a good thing but its more Mutant than High School Sweetheart. The 8 Bore looks like a better balanced overall gun, but the ball is ONLY 80 caliber....

If I was sure Id take it to Afrika for DG, Id almost surely choose the 4 Bore; but Im more likely to use it for Bears and Wild Boar, so any of the smaller options would be OK, except they arent 4 Bore.

The practical side of me says if I really need more than a 72cal and are any of the others worth the xtra $3000. Thats why I hate the practical side. So Im back to wondering if 80cal is better than 72cal?

This is crazy

This site's Steve Z. builds large bore ML's of up to 2 bore. He had a bunch of guns for sale right now. Should be listed or available on this ML forum.
I routinely shoot my .69 English gun and my buddy has a .75, also made by my bro. That is a big bore in my opinion, as in 11 gauge.
Shooting 600gr. of round ball with up to 200gr. of 2F is plenty & is quite accurate & about all the recoil this lad will put up with.

If you want the maximum you need a 4 bore, nothing else will do (I have several only because I like them)

If you want a practical, game shootable rifle, then an 8 bore is much more practical, so if you want to hunt with it this is the way to go

By the sound of your comments get a 4 bore!!

Hahaha you got me. I had just about decided It would be either the 72 cal or the 8 Bore, then I stumbled upon a loaded 4 Bore cartridge I picked up years ago and I was back to having to have the 4 Bore. I think I have to buy some 8 Bore balls to remind me 8 Bore is cool too.

So maybe I need both? The 4 to say I have a 4 Bore, and the 8 Bore to actually use.

A muzzleloading 10 bore side by side would do quite well in NA and for most of African hunting.
Just sayin'.

The .69 cal is much more affordable!

Yes - 14 bore does have benefits. Higher speeds, for instance.

Some people find the 482gr. ball, or the 466gr. 15 bore ball I shoot in mine, has more than enough recoil, especially with full power hunting loads of 6 drams.

I find it quite enough, as well.

I know they will all kill, especially anything in the lower 48 states; its just they all look tiny next to a 4 Bore...but then i look at the 4 Bore rifle and think it looks almost mutant. THATS my quandary, I want a large caliber but not a mutant size rifle. I tell myself, maybe the rifle isnt as big as I think it is AND maybe the 72cal or 8 Bore isnt as small they look next to the 4 Bore.

In my .72, I use 6.5 drams with a .725 ball and a canvas patch. Tight fit!!!

Paper patched cartridge follow up shot...if ever needed.

Well, do you want a 12 pound rifle, or a 22 pound rifle?
