GPS - Global Positioning System
      #13389 - 12/04/04 08:19 PM

I'm interested in a GPS and interested in what people and using and recommend.

I like the ones with the small screen where waypoints are be entered and show graphically. Also if they can download to a PC and mapping software. I think overtime in areas where one hunts a lot a really good picture of game movements can be built up.

Of course a nice light and smallish GPS would be a big plus.

I've got a RINO 120 that has all the features that you requested. 8 Meg memory, LCD display, all the standard interface protocals, and 12 channel receiver.

Plus it has a FRS and GMRS radio. The radio allows you to talk to, as well as track your partners and vise versa on the LCD.

No complaints yet.

I have a little Garmin gecko and they rock, the budget model so it is cheap but it is just as accutate as the expensive ones, hust doesn't have the features. I can set waypoints and get a grid reference to use on my map (I would use a compass if there were more than two lines on my topo maps, very flat up here!) and that is enough for me! Got it for $195 on special at a fishing shop up here.

I did buy one but haven't really used it much yet. I bought a more up-market one as sometimes I like playing the technology geek and want to be able to upload data to software maps. Haven't bought the maps yet but I do like them.

I have a couple of GPS's. One it Garmins GPS12Map, and the other (bigger, but still hand holdable) one is the 176C Map. The big one was mainly for use in our car when crossing africa, but I do use it when hunting in some areas too due to it's big screen and thus good/detailed veiw of the maps I have loaded into it, and the numerous waypoints of all the hunting stands where we hunt moose. It makes it easier to keep track of where I am in relation to the stands, and thus can easier communicate to the hunter sitting there where I am, and if I'm pushing a moose his way, and from what direction.

I would definatly recommend Garmin GPS's in general due to their user friendly interface. In my experiance, it's more logically set up then the competition (such as Magellen).

I agree, I know several blokes with the Magellan GPS's and they are more difficult to use, you are right, they arn't very logically setout.

My GPS is a Garmin E-trex. The model may be the "vista" (?).

I like the fact it fits in my shirt pocket. I wouldn't touch one of those huge Magellans. I would always leave them in camp.

I've been using Magellan since mid 90's and I really like them.
I bought a Garmin a couple of years back and used it a bit during the top end season and didn't like it much.
Sold it at the end of that season.
One really stupid thing that Magellan does though, is that they often change their menu system and also their terminology from one model to the next.

Had a play with a Garmin 60 CS today and it looks like a very good unit.
Super resolution colour screen was very good and the menu was well laid out.
I like it!
I'm going to organize one of these on loan for a test and will write something up here when I get a chance.

NitroX,

I haven't tried it myself but if you want nice and light and small in a GPS have you considered a Suunto X9 "wrist computer" which is basically a wristwatch with a GPS and software to allow plotting of points etc on your home computer or laptop? Not likely that you would find a smaller and lighter one. It does use a lot of electricity as do all GPS systems but this wristwatch is rechargeable with the cigarette lighter in your car.

I don't know how well it works, have wanted to see one to try myself for several months now, and before buying one would ask a lot of questions, but if it works well it should be fairly desireable.

Richard.

PS, most pilots I know who have a handheld GPS are packing a Garmin 290. RGP

NitroX,

I have had a Garmin Etrex Vista for a couple years now. I use it a lot and have been satisfied with it. I bought the maps for the US, and they add a lot. You can download 24mb of mapping data to the handheld. That allows me to download most of Virginia from Richmond west, including parts of West Virginia. When I go to Colorado I am able to download virtually all of the state west of I-25 (all the mountains), which means all of the state that matters!

Garmin's latest vista has a color display, although mine is b&w.

Been using a Garmin GPS 12 for some years now and it is excellent. More accurate than the published figures in central scotland and very quick to acquire. Might be a bit old technology wise now, but it works!

I use a little Garmin eTrex also. Very handy little gadget for marking waterholes etc in relation to campsite, cuts down on a lot of overlanding to hunting spots and I really like it on foot, a great way to find the quickest way back to the vehicle when it is 42C and you are the only creature stupid enough to be moving around on foot!!

I use my Garmin Etrex a lot, in cold wet weather and for the last couple of years. They are light, compact and tough. They are water proof too. Battery life is great, in my opinion its hard to beat. Before this I used a Garmin 12 but it was a bit too bulky. Also, remember a GPS is NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR A COMPASS. I use both and one should always carry both when in the field.
