Wow. Nice. But is the base gun worth all of this effort?

The initial low price and tractor-like reliability makes it worth it.

Well like Roger said ,its reliable ,cheap and fairly accurate -I did this years ago when I didn't do stockwork full time , its been carried through hell and back - shot very little and it doesn't look too bad for all that -basically something that's reliable looks decent and I dont have to really worry about ...its main use is when a friend has a big game tag, after the clean up they walk back to atv and I hide out for a coyote looking for a free meal

"Back in the day", I chased after Baikal Double Rifles as the AK of DRs. I argued that on days to crappy to take my Merkel to the field, then Id take a Baikal. Since then Ive had a bit of a sea change 1st as much as I love hunting, I just dont long to hunt in pouring rain or weather so cold that I need to wrap in Bear skins. 2nd I was never able to get consistent accuracy in either my O/U or SxS guns.

Now that being said, the single barrel guns have intrigued me (Ive also been looking at the single shot Henrys for a similar upgrade project-especially the brass frame model).

YES I really like what youve done. Im inspired!

I had one and really liked it and it was accurate. But the trigger was god awful! I had it looked at by good gun smiths and they could not get the trigger any good without slam fires. I think it will take a whole new trigger geometry design - has any one done this?

Its just...........well the chamber area looks all out of proportion to me - sorry it's just that part that frankly lets it all down; oh yes it would be 'bulletproof', just not my cup of tea I guess!
But you really have to admire the stock work & attention to detail of the checkering, fit & overall finish!
It's bloody good work - it really is!

I emphatically agree on the chamber area ,I've thought re barreling and re contouring the area ...but then its getting into much more work than I want to put into one of these ,this was as I mentioned a quick and cheap way for me to get into a reliable single shot at the time.

The triggers are bad no doubt and vary from rifle to rifle ,I also have a single shot in 30-06 that I've restocked for my sons first moose tag this fall and while the 223 trigger is decent the 30-06 is much better you have to learn to shoot them ,neither of these is bad enough that I've attempted to mess around with them just the same

Agreed, the Baikal is not a pretty rifle. The fact that you've made it such an appealing package in spite of that is a true testament to your craftsmanship. You do fine work, sir!

Extremely nice work!
My question will be to know from Baikal - and to a wider extent Brno, kipplauf owners which accuracy is delivered by factory barrels for recent models?
In short are these rifles worth investing in extensive restauration as everyone knows that one will not make a silk purse for a sow's ear?
Please share your range results.
