Powder Coating and the Paradox
      #341951 - 08/06/20 10:39 PM

I have owned a Holland Paradox for the past 12 years and have had success loading for it.

The one frustration I had was in practicing after 3 or 4 shots in a barrel leading would become a problem. I tried coating with Alox with poor results having the best results by wrapping the slug in Teflon tape but would still get leading.

Typically when hunting I never shot more than one or two slugs so I just learned to live with it at the target range.

I recently got into casting for a 45 Colt. In learning about that I discovered powder coating as a way to avoid leading as well as eliminating the need to lube the bullets.

After having success with powder coating the handgun bullets the idea hit me to try it on the Paradox. So I cast some of the big slugs, powder coated them and after sizing them in my push through die loaded some rounds this am and went to the range.

I couldn't tell any difference on the target and best of all experienced no leading.

Target shown was at 50yds, think I pulled that 4th shot a bit left. When I was younger I could see the target better, it's hell getting old!

Very good!

You got the powder coating advise from the fellows on the single action website?

Good shooting, 470evans. I see you chose poisonous green.
I did some reading on the coating found an outfit in Canada that sold powder and ordered some.
What was sent, was CERAKOAT Powder. I don't think it is the same stuff - is it?

Daryl,

I ordered from Powder by the Pound. Make sure you order the RAL powder, there are multiple colors available.

For some reason I'm having a hard time adding pics, stay tuned.

Wow! What a lovely rifle. I think scarlet red would be more deadly. However the green may disguise you are using lead. And makes them environmental.

470evans, that is one very spiffy piece of kit you have there!
Could you go through your reload info & how you do the coating process etc please?
I have also found coated bullets do not foul also - albeit in a much smaller caliber!

Would you please add some detailed photos of the loading tools, mould, and sizing equipment?

Thanks!

Here are some pictures of the tools:

Mold

Fixer (to secure the bullet in the case)

Regulator (to size the bullets)

Mold Pins (for hollow or solid head bullets)

Roll Crimper that I use in my drill press

These tools were all made by John Millar out of BC Canada, he does fantastic work and can make authentic tools for any of the British reloading kits.

On a side note, the cleaning tools that came with the old cases are much superior to the stuff you can buy today.

I do it the following way:

- Cast the bullets

- drop them in a plastic container with a few tablespoons of powder

- close the lid, swirl till I get tired of swirling, maybe 30 seconds

- dump the bullets out on a wire screen over another plastic container to let the excess powder drop off and be reused

- dump the bullets on parchment paper and put in the toaster oven at 400 degrees for 10 min (you will need a separate oven for this, don't use an oven you cook food with)

- size the bullets after powder coating

There are different ways I have read people do it but they all follow the basic method.

One thing I have read that is consistent is to use a plastic container to swirl that has the triangle with the "5" inside of. It apparently denotes a type of plastic that generates the required static.

The RAL powders from Powder by the Pound are what I used. There are multiple colors to pick from.

Thanks for the run-down on coating, Evans470. As rigbymauser noted, inspiring.

I'm a bit late to the show here (not a big forum guy) but thought I'd mention that I've been doing the same thing for about 5 years now. Like 470evans I had severe leading in my Paradox after 2 rounds per barrel and accuracy went to hell. I tried Alox, 50/50, and Rooster Jacket all with no success. I decided to try powder coating them and it works like a champ. I have no idea how Sherman and Ross get theirs to shoot with conventional lube but they obviously have more talent than I do. Another nice thing about the PC is it doesn't pick up any dirt.

Hard, dry and shiny have their place, apparently. Good stuff.

Beside curing the leading problem I find pretty bullets shoot much better than plain bullets, I coat my 12 bore slugs bright yellow also I use a electrostatic powder coating gun, the shake and bake you are doing sounds a little easier.
