Several years ago I stopped by the Old Sacramento Armory on my way back to the office. I saw this rifle and it was honest to god love at first sight. At first glance it looks like a Type M sporter, but on closer inspection I believe it is an early guild gun. Your observations and opinions will be most appreciated. It came to me already having suffered the sacrilege of drill and tap for scope and a re-barrel to .243 Winchester. I replaced the older 3x9 Leupold with a new Leupold 1.5x5 VX3. We have taken several California Coastal Blacktail, as it is light and a pleasure to carry up and down those steep coast mountains during the always hot and dry August coast season.

Nice rifle. And though .243 is not an original calibre it is a useful one. It a light handy rifle should be very nice to use.

Thanks. If my research and speculation is correct it was originally chambered for 7x57 and I wish it still was. The .243 is a bit short for the action length and does not chamber as smoothly as the longer round probably would. Might just have to pull the barrel and send it to the barrel maker and have a 7x57 profiled to match. But,... As is it shoots the 100gr BTSP into 1/2 MOA. Kind of tough to pull it apart when it ain't broke.

I agree, yours looks a bit 'custom' as a 'guild gun' would.
The stock seems to turn down at the rear of the comb. Does it have a trap door buttplate for cleaning rod storage?

No trap in the but plate but some pretty nice fitting on the plate that is there.
Also the stocks front cap is fashioned from horn I believe.
And the left side of the receiver does not have a Mauser signature.
Finally, I understand the proof marking format on the receiver was discontinued circa 1912.
Therefore I leap to the conclusion it is probably an early guild gun. Sure wish it could tell its story!

That is certainly a dandy little stutzen you have Mr. Bailey. Shame it's not in it's original chambering but, a dandy nonetheless! Love that horn nose cap.
