WHAT'S BETTER THAN A 577 T-REX RIFLE, "TWO" 577 T-REX RIFLES

Hello All,

You may recall my post from last January where I finally found an original A-Square 577 T-Rex Tyrannosaur rifle. I was over-joyed. I had searched for nearly 5 years trying to find one for sale. Here's the link and a picture of that rifle.

forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=bigbores&Number=323456

.

So as my heading above says: What's better than a 577 T-Rex Rifle? - "TWO" 577 T-Rex rifles. I started searching the internet and asked forum readers for help. It only took 4 days to find this second one in a Gun Shop in Tennessee. And this one's a REAL DANDY ...

Here are some pictures.

.

This one has some really nice figured wood. It has a single standing leaf rear sight, and an M8 2x EER Leupold Scope, in a set of Custom A-Square's QD Quick-Detachable Rings. There is a large Flip-Lever on the left front base. All you do is flip the lever, and twist off the scope. To put it back on - you twist it back in place, and flip the lever back. Now the rifle's back in scope mode and it never changed Zero. That's Slick!

The Scout rifle scope mounting like this is perfect for a heavy recoiling Dangerous Game rifle. It accomplishes 2 important things. First, and most important, it keeps your face "way back" away from the scope so you don't have to worry about being bashed by the scope during recoil. And Second, it keeps the action area clear for "fast-topping-off" the magazine if more shots are needed.

As many of my previous posts have shown, I love guns with stories. And the T-Rex has an everlasting story. This is one of the few guns that has an iconic youtube video that's been seen by thousands of Gun Enthusiasts from all over the World.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrImp-ek3bI

Every time I show-off the T-Rex at the range, or display it at a gun show, or just show it to visiting gun friends, they instantly recognize the rifle as; "That's the Dinosaur Gun from the Internet!" .... and now they're gonna say; "And you got 2 of them? - WOW"

Also, the famous T-REX even has a wikipedia reference on Google. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.577_Tyrannosaur

If anyone knows of another one of these big boys for sale - let me know. I'd love to have 3 of them.;)

As always, your comments are most welcome.

Nice, buckstix - glad your wish came true - and twice!
These don't look like they rattled off the floor like in the video.

You certainly are a glutton for punishment mate!
No really it is great to see that your collection is growing the way you want in to go.
Would be amazing to see 3 of these beasts living under one roof!
Makes you wonder how many were actually made?
Just goes to show you that the old Enfield M17 or P14 really are a good base for a custom rifle.

Hello lancaster,
Thanks for the reply.

A-Square has been out of business for quite some time. I spoke with Art Alphin (A-Square founder) a while back and he said they only made 12 T-Rex rifles, and most of them went to Professional Hunters in Africa. Brass is available but not sure if loaded ammo is. I reload my own. I have a couple boxes of original T-Rex ammo, but its too valuable for collectors so I won't shoot it.

Hello Daryl_S,
Thanks for the reply.

Both rifles looked pretty much un-fired when I got them. Or maybe fired one or twice with Factory ammo. Factory ammo is listed at 2460 fps with a 750g bullet. That's 163 lbs of recoil energy in the 14.1 pound rifle. My fun load (see target) is less than half that at only 77 lbs of recoil energy.

Hello 93x64mm,
Thanks for the reply.

As I said above, only twelve 577 T-Rex rifles were made by A-Square. If I find another one I'd have 25% of production. That would be cool. As for using Enfield actions, Remington had the 30-S series and their Kodiak in 375 H&H and 458 WM. Also, I have an early 1952 Weatherby 300 WBY Mag built on an M17 action. I have all the paperwork and order forms from when the original owner commissioned it from Roy.

Have you shot off those 900gr. .600's yet?

Wow, two of them. Well done. I too like the P14/M17 action. My 338/358RUM is built on a Remington M17 action. I suspect you 577T-rex would bite the shoulder at least twice as hard as my RUM.

Hello Daryl_S,
Thanks for the reply.

Not all of them. I'm saving some for hunting.

Hello Rule303,
Thanks for the reply.

Actually the recoil is very manageable. There are 3 mercury recoil-reducers built into the stock, and the the shape of the stock with the large recoil pad face, really tames recoil. I much prefer shooting this one over any of my 416 Rigby caliber rifles.

Buckstix the 416 Rigby with 450 grain projectiles is the limit of my recoil tolerance. May have to shove a recoil reducer into the butt. I like what has been done to help tame the recoil in your 577's.

I couldn't stomach the awful A-Square stock "design". Some features redoubtably for taming recoil, and some simply terrible stockist skills. A-Square stocks like a 2x4 plank of wood in design. Those pistol grip 'designs' and forends. Some very heavy recoiling rifles are made with chunkier stocks of course.

Sorry buckstix, people like different things. JMO.

Great monster of a cartridge you have there.

You must be very enthusiastic to buy two of them. "Like a crazy person", ha ha. That was only a joke. I like that line from that movie. That clip has edited out, the few seconds where "V" contemplates the question.

I am going to look for the ballistics to add to the thread.

750 grs at 2.450 fps. Punishing!

Excellent shooting from a beast.

Hello NitroX,
Thanks for the reply.

Am I a Crazy person? Probably - I have a Safari Rifle Collection, and a Double Rifle Collection, with no plans on every going on Safari.

Hello Rule303,
Thanks for the reply.

both of my .577 T-Rex rifles are more enjoyable to shoot than any of my seven 416
Rigby rifles loaded with 400g Factory ammo.

Hello NitroX,
Thanks for the reply.

If you read the chapter on Stock Design in Art Alphin's book; "Any Shot You Want" you will see the reasons behing the design of the "ugly" stock. As for me, When pulling the trigger on these Monster Guns, I'm not looking at the stock.

Also, A-Square did offer some custom options with more conventional looking stocks. like the one shown here on my A-Square 416 Hoffman. But the ugly "Coil-Check" stock, albeit clunky and ugly according to some, really tames recoil down to a much more tolerable level.
