Dirty double
      #341838 - 07/06/20 05:16 AM

I got this brainbug flying. I have the old blown .450 nitro barrels. Sleeve them into .44mag. I was thinking 20inch barrels would be cute.

here the Gibbs with 26inch barrels

Here the Gibbs with 20ich barrels(as it would look)

The old barrels

The old barrels has the lumps and dollshead fitted already. The text and minor engravings are also there.

The reason for this is I can get to shoot alot using Magtec ammo. Never mind reloading just buy shells every where and go shoot. It has the energy requirements to meet huntinglaws for roedeer.

All this wasn`t my idea. But a friend asked me if I still had the old barrels and they could be sleeved(which I knew but hadn`t given much thought).
I don`t care about .45-70, 44Marlin etc. I don`t need power as I have the .450Nitro barrels. I need cheap ammo and yet it can be useful for some small game hunting.

rigbymauser - are the .450NE completely wrecked, or is the top rib just snapped/separated?
It would be a compete shame (in my opinion here) to change caliber if the barrels had to be completely redone.
Would it be possible the resleeve new barrels to existing 'lumps' in the original caliber etc, but get inserts to shoot say a modified sub-cartridge of .458" rather than down load such a large cartridge with say Trailboss & light for caliber projectiles?

rigbymauser - I think a SxS .44 mag would make a super rifle for roe deer. With about any bullet weight from 200gr.
to 265gr. cast and jacketed available in factory ammo, something should shoot to the sights well enough, I would
expect.
I like the short 20" length suggestion. The .44 needs no more.

if possible I would chamber for the 445 super magnum so its possible to shoot the 44 mag all day but have the more powerful 445 for sunday roedeer hunting

I wouldn't shorten the barrels. Unless you need a rifle for charging tigers when sitting on a howdah saddle on an elephant.

Are the bores stuffed in the existing barrels?Or just the ribs needing replacement? Well then just fix up the ribs.

Turning it into a .44 pistol cartridge, people will ask in the future, "why did a previous owner do this, to this rifle?"

IF the double rifle is already worthless, well then no loss.

What are the Danish requirements for roe deer?

As you can guess, I don't think much of the project. But its your rifle.

Mate, just a question out of interest. How do you normally hunt roe deer? Do you normally shoot them from a high seat? Or try to stalk them in the forest or the edges of fields? What usually is the range?

When I hunt roe in Denmark we did all of that. I shot a roe females stalking through the field behind the house. Sat in a high seat for a while. Tried stalking forest paths. Enjoyed the path stalking immensely. Impressed even myself with my stalking ability to move completely and utterly quiet and slowly. Got within two metres of a roe deer. Unfortunately did not know it was there. A fern was slowly moving, and suddenly a deer broke out and ran seemingly from nowhere. I could not understand how a "twig" like that could hide the deer at a metre or two away.

I am guessing, if you want a short barrelled .44 Mag double rifle for roe deer, you must be shooting sometimes from closer range? Maybe want something shooter in an open Danish high seat box?

If I wanted a DR for roe and if it is legal where you are, I would go for a 5.6x50 Mag Rimmed rifle. Obviously not suitable for your larger framed rifle.

Sorry guys. I have given the wrong impression. The.450 Gibbs has brand new barrels which will not be ruined. Its the old wrecked barrels that could be turned into a Dirty Harry project.
I will have two sets for barrels for this gun.

Mate,

A cape gun in .450 and 12-bore!

A set of 12-bore barrels!

7x57R barrels or 6.5x57R or 6.5x53R barrels.

I like them all better than .44 Mag.

But if that's your obsession why not. And then go for short barrels. You don't need long ones for that cartridge.

But why not a .44/40 or something older. Get it inscribed with 1890 or something to confuse people in the future.

I do like your idea John for any of the 'small' bores - even a good .303British wouldn't be too far off the mark as far as energy goes when used with the shorter barrels!
But if you're hankering for a .44 then I would stick with the .44 Mag, only for the extra energy & if reloading - not for the nostalgia of a .44WCF
