DORLEAC 9.3x64 Brenneke "Best Quality Plains Game Rifle"
      #341523 - 31/05/20 01:01 AM

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have built this 9.3x64 Brenneke "Best Quality Plains Game Rifle" on an Original Mauser commercial action produced at Oberndorf in the twenties.

Of course, it has been fully blueprinted, squared and widely modified before the fitting of the 24½" Lothar-Walther barrel chambered for the remarkable cartridge designed in 1927 by Wilhelm Brenneke.

The scope is a Zeiss Victory HT 1.5-6x42, claw mounted, and the discreet ornamentation owes everything Florent Viale talented hands.

This classic rifle leaves us for the other side of the globe… (EDITED: For Australia)

Whoever is the lucky chap (or lady) then they have impeccable tastes & certainly have acquired a bespoke rifle that can certainly hunt the globe - and with style!
They also were studious enough to realize what a brilliant cartridge this actually is & to finally chamber this round into such a rifle has turned this into a very highly desirable & collectible piece.
I certainly wish it was mine.....alas no!
Beautiful work to say least is very much an understatement Mr D!

A few words about this 9.3x64 Brenneke rifle.

First of all, it's amusing to know that the very first rifle I built in the early seventies was a 9.3x64 Mauser sporter.
Of course it wasn't a masterpiece and at that time, without Internet or digital pictures, I was sending bad photos to the late Lenard Brownell in Wyoming, one of the greatest "Classic" American master gunmaker of all time, who was invaluable in his support and uncompromising advices.
To meet the demand of our friendly -and above all very patient (!)- customer, we wanted to rediscover the style of "plains game" classic rifles made by the best craftsmen during the glorious period of the thirties.
The easiest way would have been to build the weapon as a safari rifle, replica of the marvelous traditional .375 Holland whereas I wanted to succeed the challenge of making an elegant handy rifle remaining solid and pleasant to shoot.
For a 9.3 Brenneke the best choice is a10.75x68 Original Mauser action.
We used such a superb commercial system produced in Oberndorf in the twenties, an action in close to absolute new state.
Evidently at first the action was fully blueprinted before we modified the bolt handle and assembled it on a match grade Lothar-Walther barrel blank. The 620mm (24.5") barrel was then profiled to our sporter style and meticulously chambered for the 9.3 Brenneke cartridge.
Then, in the white, the barreled action has successfully undergone the severely demanding test of the French proof house that applies, without the smallest concession, the requirements of CIP under ISO 9001 norm.
After that, everything else is just fun.
The stock has been cut from an old, well-seasoned and nicely figured French walnut blank and retains the usual style of our productions.
Our customer opted for a Zeiss Victory HT scope, certainly the best of this type of high-end optics and we fitted it on our special quick detachable claw mount.
The restrained engraving is from the talented hand of young Florent Viale and the whole has been carefully rust blued with some parts bone and charcoal color casehardened the traditional way.
Incidentally, this rifle print cloverleaf at 100 yards with hard-hitting RWS UNI Classic [TUG: Torpedo Universal Brenneke] 293 grains.

Joel,

Thanks for the detailed explanations.

I note in the past you have mentioned dwindling suppliues of suitable actions. As I want you to make me one or two rifles in the imaginary future ( ) I think putting a couple of actions suitable aside is wise. But you have made that just as hard, a 10.75x68 near new M98 action???!!! :O add that to the imaginary future as well. Ha ha.

This rifle is destined for a lucky customer in Sydney. Lucky bastard! Are you on the membership of NE?

Joel, thanks for your support of the NE forums. I am glad you have also got several sales from our members as well over the years. Its great to see these lovely classic USABLE rifles being made and hopefully used.

We need a thread of the owners actually using them!

I am sure this one will be.

As I mentioned elsewhere I would like to create a small thread on "moon sights". This rifle has a lovely one. In the closed position. It would be nice to have photos of the sight in closed, fully opened half way to illustrate it.

Then there are other types where the moon sight flips up from behind. On bolt actions and double rifles.

For a decade I was thinking of a NitroExpressWiki system. Setting it up lots of work. Especially the actual posts and data. A halfway house instead using the forums, and tagging instead.

Any photos would be appreciated.

Thanks for the photos above and information.

Hope that the pictures that follow will clearly show the functioning of the "moonsight" that combines a fine bead with a large ivory one to use at dusk or when the light is insufficient [as in dense forests].

Just beautifully made, Joel. Thank you. I really like your muzzle crown as well, a bit of as stickler for me on muzzleloaders due to their different nature.

Not to hijack the thread.
Yes , the 10,75x68 Commercial Oberndorf actions are perfectly tailored for the 9,3x64 Brenneke.
Bolt head , magazine box , feeding flawless without any alteration.

Maybe that I get lapidated by the purists and the aficionados of the historic - in my eyes somewhat anemic - 10,75 , but in 1999 I had that Type A Double square bridge 10,75 rebarrelled to 9,3x64 .
One of the most versatile all around cartridge for african use.

Third from top

Miles away from the perfect and flawless execution of the Dorleac creation I should ad.

It’s a masterpiece and every little detail has been thought out precisely, the master Joel and his team as always have excelled in more ways than I can mention. Thank you Joel and the Dorleac team, you have built an absolute masterpiece of a rille, now to start thinking of a Dorleac 7x57 to compliment the 404 and the 9.3x64, thank you Joel, as always a pleasure to own another outstanding Dorleac rifle.
