How Light Can They Be?
      #341028 - 12/05/20 08:42 AM

Hello Folks,

I started a thread parallel to this one in the double rifle forum, I'm thinking of selling many of my nice rifles to fund the purchase of one really nice rifle. One of my top criteria is weight; I would like the new rifle to weigh five pounds, to which I will add a six ounce Leupold 2.5x Ultralight scope.

Most of my rifles are single shots, and weigh seven to nine pounds, with most coming in right around eight pounds. In order to achieve the lower weight, I'm going to limit the cartridge choice to not more than 7x57R, and would be satisfied with the 7-30 Waters. The game is "meat" hogs, wild pigs in the 150 - 200 pound range. I do enjoy wild pork.

What I would like to accomplish with this thread is to identify candidate rifles and makers. I'm familiar with Blaser and Merkel (although I've never actually examined one). I know of no others that fit the bill.

Thank you for your help.

Tom

Hello Tom.

Too bad it has to be a new rifle. The "Tell" style rifles can be made quite light and can be a fit for smaller cartridges like the 7-30.
Good luck in your quest.

Hi Tom,

By "new" I meant new to me. Please tell me more about the "Tell" style rifles.

Thanks, Tom

P.s., I did see the thread started by Marakai on the "Fraser wanna be" rifle.

"Tell" rifles are lightweight stalking rifles, typically in smallbores up to 30-30 case head size.
Barrel lengths tend to be around 26" with a weight under 6#.
They are usually plain, but I have seen some that were a bit more ornate.
The tang safety and underlever opening make it a perfect stalking rifle and with the long barrel they carry and point well.
I have never seen one without double-set triggers.

For the game like pork, I have worked on them in 9.3x72r, 8.15x46r, and a 6.5x52r with claw mounts that is currently residing in Montana.
I currently own one in 8.15

That 6.5 (25-35), would probably be enough gun to cover any east coast woods hunting. I developed loads before it left NY. A 117gr hornady rn would clock just about 2200 and shot under an inch at 100yds.

You could probably find a Kipplauf in a larger caliber but the weight would go up unless it had a dural frame.

I also worked on a combo gun in 6.5x52 x 20ga. Beautiful gun and also weighed under 6#. Would be great to have the additional shotgun barrel with a load of #4 buck or a slug.

Here in Britain I have just finished reading a review of the Haenel Jaeger 9, which is a new Kipplauf rifle like an over-under shotgun but with just one barrel. It weighs 2.30 kilogrammes, which is 5 pounds 1 ounce in Imperial units. Calibre is .308 Winchester, which will be ample, but there are other options.
The British distributor is Viking Arms: see www.vikingarms.com

It looks really sexy!

Hi HB,

I went there straight away, This is the Blaser/Merkel rifle without the engraving. I can't find a U.S. distributor for Hannel, which is disappointing. I like rifles plain, and only tolerate engraving.

Thanks, Tom

R.J Renner customizes Ruger No. 1 riles, and one of his packages is the "Ultra-light No. 1." Has anyone here ever had a gun built by Mr. Renner? What opinions do any of you have about this conversion?

Any help will be welcomed. Thank you.
