Marrakai:

You're right! I remember a Westley droplock in .22 High-Power. Handling it was almost a sexual experience. Likewise an early Holland Royal in .303. What a joy to shoot.

500 grains:

Never been fond of game scene engraving either and most of the pre-war British engravers weren't good at it. Nice drop-lock though.

400NE

Do you think that is original engraving? It looks to me to added on as it apppears the scrolling is cut off in many places.

Mick:

No, of course not, and yes, they should have left it off. It IS in bad taste. My point was that it nonetheless looks British. Perhaps the gun was ordered with a bear on the floor plate, and they forgot? That's exactly what a pre-war British engraver's interpretation of a bear looks like. Kinda like the gaur that Jeffery so loved to put on the action bar of their boxlock rifles. Cartoonish. I always hate to see game scene on pre-war English guns. With the exception of the rare pleasant surprise (Wild and some of the early Scott's come to mind), its never any damn good.

400NitroExpress,

We called the other side of the Jeffrey "Birmingham Pussy cats"
as we couldn't think of any other cat that had such a flat, squared off nose !!!

We also had a name for the Gaur but I can't remember it but it was quite funny.

(Before I get jumped on, I was born in Brimingham, not that it looks much like it
did when I was born).

I've seen these rifles in weights ranging from too light to too heavy. So weight is not an issue, somewhere out there is what ever weight you desire.

A guy here locally has a DR chambered for 22 LR.

The brits made plenty of small DR's. there are a larger number of chamberings using big cases behind bores from 24 to 30 caliber. Such as the 275 H&H on the 375 case. Such cartridges were designed for high velocity long range work, such as stag in Scotland. They would be ducky for elk in the westren US.

Doubles are for game, magazine rifles were meant for the trenches.

Over the years owned two Francotte boxlock ejectors in .30-40 Krag. Both shot very badly with the many kinds of factory ammo I tried in them.

Re-opening this interesting thread.

What about the smaller double rifles. Any reason for a .22 double, a .243 or .25 double?

I know there are a fair few European doubles in 6.5mm but a 6.5 mm is a great calibre bridging the gap between the smallest and the versatile 30's and 8mm's due to its heavier bullet loadings.

What would say a .22 Hi-Power double be used for?

Curl,

I was just admiring your bears on your website this noon and again I find them here. In full sized technicolor! Great stuff.

I think it would be a hoot to have a DR in a .22 cal.
A hornet would be a lot of fun for hunting squirrels, groundhogs, rabbits, etc.
There have been two hornets I have noticed in the past
year or two. One was a best quality SLE by Francotte
that Westley Richards had on their website. I lifted the
photos, as I am wont to do:

You might notice that this Francotte has an articulated
front trigger. You sure want that with the awesome recoil
of that caliber! Also the reinforced action. What a nice
piece of work!

The price on that little hornet wasn't small: US$29k. Even
so, it didn't take long to sell. Wish I could have bought it.

The other was a dandy SLE by Luccini that Griffin & Howe had.
For some reason I didn't get the pics. It was priced
about the same, and didn't linger long either. Whew! that's
a lot of $$$ for one of those little cuties!

A .22 Savage HP would be a little more fire and noise.
I've never owned a rifle in that caliber and don't know its strengths.

At Vintagers last September FAMARS had a nice boxlock DR
in .22 LR. It was a beauty and just tiny. Not a tiny
price, though: US$25k.

Galazan offers it's interpretation of the Fox in a .22LR.
I have seen one and would like it too. Big $$$ though.

I'm currently gathering the loading tools to shoot my
.280 Flanged Nitro Express. I think it will be a great
deer gun. I'll report when I make progress on the loads.

As stated before, my .300 Win Mag by Josef Winkler is
quite a shooter and very useful (as seen above). It
is regulated for the 220 grain RN bullets, so it means
business. It shoots 1 1/4" groups (4 shots) at 100 yds.
I have used it to hunt elk, and I have taken deer
and the two bears above.

In the past I have mentioned my Francotte SLE in 9x57R.
It's a wonderful DR. I shot it in the stalking rifle
event at Vintagers several years ago. For some reason
I haven't taken it afield to hunt. I'll have to do that.

Then the 9.3x74R. What a great caliber! I remember the
thread a year or so ago in which many members stated this
is the most versatile DR caliber of all. Really it's a
medium caliber, not a small bore. It's hard not to like a
9.3.

Everybody wants the big dinosaur boomers, but I can say
that once you get hooked on the small calibers you won't
turn back. I confess that I did kill a deer with my .500
Nitro this past fall, but I just wanted to bloody the rifle.
For North American hunting the .500NE is just a novelty.

Yeah, this is a great thread. You didn't have to tacky it
up with those bears!

Off to Las Vegas in 2 days. Maybe return with another small
to medium DR! I'll be looking.

Regards,
Curl

NitroX,

It would seem that .22 centerfires would be decent for calling foxes at night. Around here, shotgunning distances predominate.

In that vein, I have been interested in the feasibility of an extra set of rimfire barrels on a small-framed DR,
like the Merkel 141 or 161, along with a regular set in something like 6.5X65R or .270 Win. for whitetails.

Could this work?
