Beautiful German Dreyse Stalking Rifle
      #340959 - 11/05/20 01:16 AM

I have a beautiful German stalking rifle built on an interesting Dreyse action. Based on a chamber cast, it appears to be chambered in the popular, but now obsolete, 10.5x47R black powder cartridge. Unlike many similar rifles, this is not a sporterized M71, as some assume. It has a 28.5” Octagonal barrel, Double Set Triggers and a Tangent rear sight similar to ones seen on Swiss rifles. I would rate the metal finish at over 70% with minor edge wear. The bore is EXCELLENT!!! Stocks are VG+ with a few minor scuffs and handling marks. Top flat of barrel marked C.I. ARESCHOUGS IN MALMO. Areschougs was a sporting goods and hardware store in Malmo, Sweden that imported many items from all over Europe. The faceted receiver, triggerguard and buttplate have traces of case coloring. Receiver has some light scroll engraving. Since I am not a subscriber to any photo hosting sites, I cannot upload photos. I can send photos via email. Looking for other examples of similar rifles on Dreyse actions. Thanks.

If allowed, there are pics here. Rifle is for sale.

NOTE: When first listed, I thought it was a Mouser variant. Once bids were made, I could not edit.

Interesting ctg. Mine is a lined M71 on a purely sporter stock with fancy trigger guard.
Really nice rifles.
My profile has my e-mail address. I would like to exchange pictures if you would like to do this.

Added an auction link to original post. Has plenty of photos. Researching Dreyse guns, I note that most have "Dreyse" engraved on them. Mine only has the retailer name on barrel.

it a scaled down Mauser 71 action, see no indication it was made by dreyse. could be( with old guns all is possible) but I would say someone in Suhl or the near by Zella Mehlis made it. It was very, very common that this guns were delivered without a name and the lokal gunmaker added his own name to the rifle before it was sold. if you dont find a hidden name when disassemble the rifle it will be a mistery for ever who make it.

Hmmmm? Originally thought Mauser. Then on an antique guns forum was told it lacked Mauser attributes. Another guy showed me a Dreyse that looked very similar. But at this time so many smiths were experimenting, could be anything.

Interesting that the end of the bolt does not show behind the rear ring.
That action does look abbreviated, shortened. Mine is full length.

I have not been able to take it down, as the tang screw has such a fine slot, none of my gunsmithing screwdrivers will fit it. If I can get the screw out then I can knock out the stock key for a look at proofs, etc.

Lancaster. Here is an almost identical action described as similar to M71. Also only marked with retailer name.

yes, but also not made by burgsmüller

burgsmüller was a mail order house, making some guns but most stuff was bought in suhl/zella mehlis.
this scaled down M 71 actions were very common around 1900. the old catalogs are full with this rifle's for any cartridge you want from 6mm Flobert up to 9,3x72R or 12ga target rifle, any size, any configuration.
why? the design was old but the people know it, like it, it was free( no patent). anyone can make it then

would like to see pics of this rifle when possible, understand a little about this firm.
there are Dreyse made rifles with real M/71 actions because Dreyse also made this rifles for the military so they had them on stock but never see such a scaled down version with this name.

That one is closer to mine, although mine looks newer, but has a very similar trigger guard. The cheek piece on mine is a little more elaborate and nicer wood. I did picture it here, once. I no longer have the photobucket account.

Lancaster is right. Just another Zella - Mehlis made rifle on a simplified M71 type action. As Lancaster wrote, such actions were made in many sizes by many small makers, sort of a "cottage industry". Here, like most often, the Mauser flag safety and the bolt stop screw + washer were left off. No relation to the Dreyse, Soemmerda factory who had their own quite rare patented bolt action designs.
Here are two photos of such an action of tiny size, a rook & Rabbit rifle retailed by Sauer & Sohn, Suhl, for the tiny bp 7x20R centerfire cartridge.

As you see, this action is barely large enough to handle a .32-20 cartridge

ahh - yes, was wondering about the safety and bolt stop screw and washer.

Here is a photo of an equally tiny F.v.Dreyse patent action. Note the completely different receiver shape and the safety arrangement.

Dreyse, too, made their distinctive patent action in several sizes, adapted to cartridges of different lengths. This is a small one.
