I'd like to hear people's experiences, good or bad on reloading and using heavier than usual projectiles than usual in a calibre.
I put this in Big Bores, but could be a medium bore. And not in reloading, because while reloading comments are very welcome, it is more about reloading AND usage of these projectiles.
What am I talking about?
Calibres and projectiles such as: .30 - 250 gr projectiles perhaps RN-SP or RN-FMJ; 8mm - 250 gr, the same; .338 - 300 gr similar; 9.3 mm - 320 gr; .375 - 350 gr; .416 - 450 gr; .404 (423) - 450 gr.
What reloads did you use?
Any issues, such as lack of velocity, barrel twist not sufficient to stabilise?
What bullet was it? Who is the maker?
What have you used them on, or plan to use them on? Why the heavier bullet than usual?
We can thank Geoff MacDonald of Woodleigh for most of these heavier than usual projectiles, often made in both SP and FMJ style. Having both RNSP and FMJs RN is good, but not always made.

Woodleigh Bullets put out a loading manual in 2014 that was compiled by Geoff, Graeme Wright and Hans Bossert. I've tried some 350gn loads in my 375H&H but only on paper - I'll reply again with details when I get on the computer tonight. Although not on the list, I've also tried 550gns in my 458WM.

For the 375H&H I use 66gn AR2208 behind the 350gn Woodleigh or 350gn Taipan (I bought a couple of boxes of these at a gun show - not sure if they are still available, they looked like old stock) - velocity unknown but good accuracy. The ADI website doesn't list 350gn and the Woodleigh manual doesn't list AR2008 against this projectile weight.
For the 458WM I use 72gn AR2206H behind the 550gn Woodleigh RN or PP. No load on the ADI website and a couple of grains above the Woodleigh manual - velocity unknown but estimated 2070fps based on the Woodleigh manual, and good accuracy. Accuracy with the 500gn is better though, still using AR2206H.
Note that most of the loads in my 375H&H are generally 15-20% more than those on the ADI website - fine in my rifle and I have worked them up cautiously from recommended loadings. That's also the reason I use AR2208 - I can't fit enough AR2209 in it, even though many others favour AR2209 in this cartridge.

1895 .405 WCF 400 grain Woodleigh Weldcore and solids Handloads at 2076 fps mv Very accurate with five shot avg velocity deviation so low I will not put it in print.
Very effective at 20 yards on RSA Cape Buffalo; Weldcore entered just behind rearmost left rib and traveled through heart (1+ inch hole) and out between front legs. Used solid to break pelvis to keep game from entering brush. Dead before we could reach it (had to scare away other buff) with loud death rattle within a short time.
Very pleased with bullet performance.

A 1000 grain round ball is not a heavy load for a 7 ga, but it is still 1000 grains at 1100 fps.
Just think of it as a 22 long rifle that has 1000 grain bullet.[.875 diameter]
It will shoot length ways thru a deer. Exit hole looks like a golf ball left the building.

What's the load and what's the firearm?
That's just a bit faster than my air rifle

I have the handle of my loading mallet drilled out to measure 160 or 180 grains of 2F.
Smooth bore muzzle loader.

coll416 - Are you sure about that 9.3x62 load? It appears to be a 9.3x64 load, to me & a stiff one at that.

Hi Daryl, Thanks. I have put a temporary warning message on the original post.
